I don't want the triple lock scrapped, we simply can't afford it any longer. I wish we could.

Maybe we should apply that logic to the whole welfare state? The NHS is failing so lets just shut it, Schools aren't doing great so send the kids home? The police don't even bother to investigate a swathe of crimes so lets just abandon law and order?

I think you've taken the wrong end of the stick. Everyone is making a big hoohah about the triple lock, it's incredibly expensive and the money should be spent elsewhere. Such as improving social care.
In an ideal world we'd do both, but we're borrowing to fund the paltrey public service we get at the moment - and that's after Cameron's austerity. Something has to give.

It looks like Nigel Farage is referencing an article in the Daily Express which was referring to a story about a 27 year old British guy (Joel) who wanted to do a level 2 and 3 in plumbing on top of the level 1 he already has so he that he can go on and become a plumber.
Firstly, good on this guy for wanting to continue his education and improve his prospects, he’s in already work and making a contribution so he’s unlikely to be just a lazy oil bumping his gums off, that said but there’s a lot going on here that needs to be considered to get to the bottom of things.
Whilst Farage is only making reference to the immigration side of things, access and payment for the training and educational courses and i think access to and funding for education is a much bigger issue.
The criteria for accessing the funding is …. “Anyone who is legally residing in the UK and earning below £26,800 a year can access full funding for skills training through the Adult Skills Fund.”
Based on that criteria, an asylum seeker would have to have been granted the right to remain in the U.K. to access the funding. Given the back log of cases, I suspect it’s very unlikely many if any asylum seekers would be able to access the funding after 6 months.
If there is to be funding for asylum seekers at some point after they’ve obtained legal status, then it should be linked to having already made contributions to society in the form of paying taxes etc from other roles and jobs.
In this particular case, Joel is probably ineligible for funding because he likely earns over £26,800pa. Should he be eligible for funding? Under the current framework I don’t think he should be, he’s earning money and why should he be subsidised and treated any differently to the thousands of kids who go to Uni and have to pay they’re way through Uni (incurring a load of debt on the way). He’s likely to be earning good coin in a few years so I’d imagine the funding could be repaid pretty quickly. That’s said, do I think the current funding system is right? No I don’t.
The big question for me is what should education cost? We need to have a society where education is accessible and affordable, if we want to have a highly skilled workforce and a society where people can go out become the best that they can then things need to change and affordability is part of that.

Look closely at Reform, Nigel has 5 homes but he had been caught out after only decalring 2 of them, strong rumours he'd a[plied for a German pasport and he always seems to be not listening when illegal things around Reform are said. Then there's Tice, the two of them moan about immigrants but Tice spends a large chunk of time in Dubai where his partner lives. The party is itself under criminal investigation.

Reform's biggest asset and its biggest problem is Farage.
Few people on the centre right, and it is the centre right despite what many will insist, have grasped the zeitgeist as much as old Nige. By stating generally mid right wing views over the last few years he has captured a lot of the territory the Conservatives used to inhabit before they went all "Lib Dem" with Cameron, May and Johnson.
The downside is that Farage is a bit of a shit. An utterly untrustworthy chancer nowhere near capable of being Prime Minister, but nobody else they have has anything like his appeal to a certain section of the public, and thanks to their decision to fill their ranks with failed Tories that situation has only gotten worse.
So the party most likely to challenge the current hapless Labour Govt isn't really up to forming a capable Govt themselves. I like Badenoch but the Tories are also miles away.
Basically Britain is F*cked. A military coup might be our best option, if only the armed forces weren't also an underfunded mess. |  |
