It wasn’t a good watch, but then not every game the Swans play will be, and there will be more this season. What is extremely annoying is the clueless way this side collapsed in wave after wave of Southampton attacks, many of which were caused again by silly mistakes and a lack of competency on the ball.

We struggle to break the low blocks of the better teams in this div . The Wrexhams brums Albions Saints etc. They are very well drilled and know each others games very well Physicality plays a big part as well obviously .
To become a top 6 side we have to be able to do this regularly. I watched Arsenal score their goal against Napoli away tonight in the champions league . If you get a chance watch it . Napoli parked the bus Arsenal moved the ball from side to side but always looking ahead for the forward pass if it was on. Patience was key and confidence in their own ability. Neat fast interplay from walking pace suddenly opened up a gap for Odegaard to drill a shot into the bottom corner.
It was a classic example of how to open up a massed defence .
Matos should show that clip and say to the midfield /attack this is how we have to do it .
And practise practise practise.

We clearly have a Plan A. When Plan A works it's great. When it doesn't we have so far shown little ability to come up with a Plan B despite our expensive recruitment.

The more we fail to break down sides who sit deep, or continue to struggle against the "better" teams, the more questions will be asked about some of the decisions being made.

The key words here were ‘looking ahead’. We need to look for runners getting into spaces but sometimes I still think we are too static. And as you say, this is the sort of thing that is practiced on the training ground. On the times we do it, it seems they don’t always know what is about to happen. It will take time but there needs to be drills practiced until they can do it in their sleep.

Getting to the byline more often or delivering early crosses from wide positions when the middle of the park is blocked would 100% help solve some of these issues and put far more pressure on defences by mixing up our attacks. This walking the ball round the edge of the box stuff is just not effective enough and every team we play know its coming so are happy to sit and hit us on the break. This tactic not only offers us little reward but also carries a dangerous threat as we have seen on countless occasions.

I have noticed that when we defend we only leave one up top, this is something else that needs to change to offer more of a threat on the counter. We shouldn't need to drag 10 men behind the ball every time the opposition attacks, this in fact only encourages the opposition to add players to the attack if there is no threat to them on the counter.

Personaly I would leave at least 2 up whenever possible to occupy defenders and give us more of a chance of retaining possession when its cleared. Finally I would also not leave Vip up on his own when he plays as he very rarely wins back possession or gets us free kicks to relieve the pressure, Idah is far more effective in that role.
