What is extremely annoying is the clueless way this side collapsed in wave after wave of Southampton attacks, many of which were caused again by silly mistakes and a lack of competency on the ball.  1

Perfectly said, It won't be the last time we lose this season. But for me we did everything wrong in this match. Matos has to take a lot of the blame for his selection and tactics. I get the feeling Matos won't learn though and Cabango will play on the weekend. We needed Lissah and Welsh with Key. I can't put the whole blame on Cabango, VIP was sluggish, Idah should of started. But Matos needs to make a statement on the weekend now with dropping the captain. If he does then irrelevant of the result he will be sending a message
But again, how many Managers will do this. I'll be suprised if Cabango is benched. | | | |

Our slow play and wide defending was exposed again and we showed how much we struggled in front of goal
We seem to struggle against Well organised teams ,so we need to change our strategy to find a way to stifle them and also to open them up and create chances
We are not a bad team but we are not in the top echelon either …yet

People bemoan Key's defending ,how would he have coped with Scienza had we stuck to the back 4 which started against Wrexham.
We as fans are entitled to opinions but its the Manager who knows players best what they are capable of and what is needed in certain games.
Southampton have a lot of quality in their side.....tonight's loss is not the end of the world....Matos will learn from tonight. | |

Poor tactics, no way a manager like Parkinson would leave Lissah exposed one on one with their best attacking player.time and time again .The lack of tracking back in the first half was criminal as was the Hail Mary approach at 2-1:with 20 minutes to go.
Our crossing was just awful, we had no plans to receive crosses it's quite simple tactical stuff; if we are breaking into the box crosses go in hard and low for example. Again , if the play is more static we try and isolate an attacker at the near or far post by pulling around defenders for example. We stand there like lemons.

The stats don't really portray a one sided 3-1 win. Team selection, tactics and individual errors cost us.

For me Matos put out a side he felt wouldn’t lose, it was a bad call. Eom on the bench for nearly eighty minutes proved that.
Statistically he may well have thought this is a game which his side can afford to lose too. That puts pressure on the players for Burnley this Saturday. Personally I never felt the Swans would win this. I don’t think Cabango is being singled out either. He played poorly against Wrexham and was the same at Southampton. He slows everything down wanders forward with the ball, puts his foot on it (no different to when Russell Martin was manager) and passes backwards in key moments. He doesn’t see outlets in front of him and always plays for safety. That extinguishes any thoughts of attacking the opposition. Defensively I’m happy with him to an extent.
What Matos does and how he changes that is down to him. But you can’t attack any opposition by being slow to see what is immediately available and it wasn’t just him last night. One loss in six is excellent but last night when analysed it most certainly wasn’t. As Liam noted and we have been saying since Saturday, this was certainly one game too far.

Whilst all the talk has been about our defence ,not much has been said about us not converting chances,when 1 nil down Stamenic presentd Vip with a great chance yet he failed to connect that goes in we are back to all square and it has an effect on Southampton.
Matos hopefully will learn from tonight,its not a disaster, need to regroup and ret a result on Saturday | |

Perfectly said. I know a few have had a pop at me for singling Cabango out and yes, Lissah and Welsh wasn't free from ciritism. But Cabango as you said slows the play down. Matos went into this to not lose hence Lissah for Key. He got it all wrong. My worry is Matos won't learn from this and Cabango will play on Saturday. Is Cabango a solid defender, 100%. But he like Burgess does not suit this faster pace Matos team. [Post edited 9 Sep 8:34]

Yep, when defence concede they gets pelters and those pelters never stop.
Bur when strikers miss decent chances they dont get anywhere near the stick that defenders get, when their job is probably more important.
As you say if vip connects to stamenics cross its 1-1 and it could have been a different game.
We as a collective are missing too many chances that better teams would put away, if we start to get clinical we will be putting pressure on our defence and we will struggle to get into the play offs. | | | |

How can we be so sure it is Cabangos return which has had a detrimental effect?
Starting with Vip over Idah did that have detrimental effect? Would Idah have buried the chance Vip squandered?
Should Eom have started?
Southampton are a good side they have quality in Downes,Scienza and Ward-Prowse.

Liam’s report is very accurate ,Southampton did target our defensive flanks ,as most teams try to do ,because our fullbacks move infield too much,allowing the space out wide for the wingers to get the ball,we see it every game ,teams play the ball from side to side then pop the ball out wide to an unmarked player ,who invariably gets past the fullback and gets balls into the box ,this wouldn’t happen if we marked tighter ,its basic defending not rocket science
Lissah and Welsh are undoubtedly our best centre back pairing ,quick ,mobile and always trying to move the ball forward,we look a better team with them | | | |

I think we need to adapt to the opposition a bit more. It’s all very well being pleasing on the eye and trying to play PL style football but it’s not always the right key to unlock Championship sides. Sometimes it needs a bit if beef mixed with guile to stifle the opposition. I get the impression sometimes that we are going to play one way and one way only and suffer the consequences accordingly.
We want to be entertained I agree and it’s lovely when it works like it did against Watford but we have to be realistic thar to get points at places like Southampton will be very difficult anyway but maybe less gang ho is a better approach to get a point. All in hindsight of course! |  |

Cabango was not directly at fault for any of the goals conceded - the first came from Just being outmuscled by Downes and Fulton not tracking Azaz, the second and third due to poor game management and our full-backs being miles from their markers as usual.
He is a solid defender, we know this. But the issue with Cabango is he is not effective for a team that plays our way i.e. from the back, chasing the match. For all the reasons already mentioned - too slow on the ball, 99% of the time takes the safe option, and can't consistently play quality balls through the channels or into midfield. | | | |
