I'll say this too, concurrent sentences atre a complete cop out (excuse the pun) and should never, ever be used again. Do the crime, do the time, all of it. We need more prisons for serious criminals.

“ everyone is entitled to the best defence possible” Our former barrister contributor posted that I’ve been “ hammered” before for saying this But I shall repeat… Lawyers have to leave any moral scruples out of their work They have to refuse to defend if they believe client is guilty Nevertheless , they will look for any mitigation to keep murderers like this on the loose or released If case fails on legal technicality then they will have no quarms at all because it’s the fault of someone else A job for special people , as I’ve said Special

Totally agree on this concurrent sentence issue. At the least, the very least an added crime should add extra years, a third more again and so on. Why should they worry anyway, they’ll be let out on early release to accommodate the hurty word villains!

The whole point is they get that defence so it is proved beyond a reasonable doubt. If they don't get a defence then innocent people will end up in prison. The poster you refer too is a very good person, a very nice person. How our legal system is set up is not his fault and he does the best job he can within it.

Read what I posted How would you defend the Southport child killer ? I said they are special I meant it They have no time to take moral stands I bought him lunch at Blackpool They can’t afford to be “ nice” in court which is my point Finally, more guilty walk free than innocent are convicted Professional criminals will never “ cough” as it’s their business Their moral code is different It’s about finding loopholes If insuccessful then we have the appeals circus If that fails , local MP to bleed over They take us for mugs I’m out of here as I’ve become cross

He’s already being held at Rampton Hospital, so I’d wager there’s a good chance the defence will be all about his mental state. I don’t think he’ll ever get out of there. Totally agree with your comments about more prisons for serious criminals, we need to be able to lock people like this guy up for ever. What this incident shows is that our MH services are still failing, how many times have we seen this type of incident take place? There’s always an enquiry, a few people come out and say lessons will be learnt etc etc ,… but nothing ever changes.
