Frankly,I get annoyed with people who tell people to cheer up.I is the single most dangerous thing you can say to someone with dark deep issues.
I learned this when ,as a fresh plod I got called to a "jumper" on a bridge over a motorway.
I talked to her whilst she hung out on the edge of the parapet and eventually came back .
Sadly, she hung herself after being released from hospital later that week. Being an unlucky person,I was the one who got the call to a house where concern was expressed for the occupant. It was not pleasant for me but clearly she was at peace.
I stupidly told her to be "positive" and comfort in her friends and to try to be happy.
Just about the biggest mistake in my life and I m not afraid to admit it.
It lingers still in my mind. | |

Well said. We have had/have mental health issue in the family. People saying 'Man up'. "what have you got to be miserable about?" etc. do nothing but drive depression deeper. I dread having to deal with depression in students. | | | |

My point is just that;that people are not able to "get on with it" .It can be mental or from socio-economic history.
My mother died before my father who could not cope at all .Genetic reason.
My father died shortly after.He gave up .
My mother ,being a woman ,would have coped better if He had died first.
