Under rated by those outside Wales. Great boxer.
Joe was brilliant, as was the matchstick man.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Jimmy Wilde - by a country mile.

Had at least 500 fights in boxing booths before he went professional.

Still holds the record in world boxing for consecutive wins (94).

Ran out of flyweights to fight, so took on heavier bantamweights/featherweights, and knocked them all out too.

Not bad for a stick-thin, 5'2", seven and a half stone bloke, who looked more like a weedy schoolboy than a boxer.

The Mighty Atom, The Tylorstown Terrier or The Ghost with the Hammer in his Hand - take your pick.

Sadly, he got badly mugged at Cardiff train station in 1965, and died in poverty in a nursing home 4 years later.

Pity he wasn't born 80 years later - could have fought a fraction of those fights, and retired a rich man.

Wilde, no question.

He has just about slipped from the consciousness of living memory now but his impact on the world of boxing was immense. He was still regularly topping the best pound-for-pound polls among American sportswriters forty years or so after his final bout.

The term ‘Legend’ gets bandied about far too readily but Wilde’s claim to it was entirely genuine.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Fiery you're very close with Jimmy's record 😇 but he has the longest unbeaten run.

94 fights unbeaten ... 93 wins and 1 draw, before he lost his first fight against Tancy Lee. Some boxing historians have him down as 103 fights unbeaten, but those extra 9 fights were classed as ND (No Decision).

"Although uncommon these days, a "no decision" bout (ND) occurred when--by law or by pre-arrangement of the fighters--if both boxers were still standing at the bout's conclusion and there was no knockout, no decision was rendered and neither boxer was declared the winner. "

"There were two primary reasons for ND bouts: 1) some jurisdictions, in an attempt to curb gambling on the outcome of fights, enacted laws prohibiting decisions; and 2) some reigning boxing champions, in order to protect their titles, would demand in advance that a bout be "no decision" so that his opponent could not capture his crown by a win on points. "

This prompted me to dig into the Ring s list of all time greats .Wilde is 19th on that list.

I love bantering about boxing and without doubt Wilde was Wales most iconic boxer.

Don't f*** with me! 🤣

Almost makes me want to take up wearing a bowler hat.

3 or 4 of his victories came at the Drill Hall in Swansea during WW1. I'm presuming that's that TA place near the Vetch Field?

Whilst checking details on Wilde I discovered, bizarrely, that referees used to ref from outside the ring, and they'd only clamber into the ring when they deemed the fight over. They didn't start refereeing in the ring until 1917.

Ironically, Wilde was deemed too weak to enlist as a soldier in WW1 but did eventually get in as a gym/fitness instructor.

No, mate. That Drill Hall would have been the one on Park Road in Brynmill. It’s long gone.

Looks like I will be standing alone here by saying Freddie Welsh is the greatest fighter from Wales. Jimmy Wilde has the numbers, the ko's, the unbeaten streak and the prettier record but scratch the surface and there are not many top quality wins. He 'only' defeated two Hall of Fame (IBHOF) boxers.

Freddie Welsh has *seven* Hall of Fame scalps on his record, some multiple times. The quality of opposition in their records is light years apart and Freddie probably has the most significant victory of any Welsh fighter, maybe even the UK, with his win over Benny Leonard, regarded by many as the greatest Lightweight ever and the man who would later take Freddie's title.
Unfortunately, Freddie is more forgotten than Jimmy.

Sad end to his life in similar circumstances to Wilde, neither recovered from beatings they received though Welsh's demise was far more rapid. Attacked by cowards who wouldn't have stood a chance if both men were in their prime.
I don't understand how there is no statue for either man in their home towns when Driscoll has one, you trip over them in Merthyr and even Bomber Pearce has one.

Mate, it sounds like you’ve already browsed your way through this, but in case you haven’t happened across it you’ll love this:

It’s fantastic, and as far as I know, the only chronicle of the man and the times he lived in. It’s a few years old by now but second-hand copies ought to be easy enough to get your hands on.

They came down from the valleys in numbers to support Thomas and the whole thing ended up in days of rioting in Cardiff between the valley commandos and Irish immigrants, Thomas aka Welsh (changed his name not for his mum to know, same happened years later with another Welsh great Dr Jack) beat Peerless yet Peerless went on to have 100,000 people at his funeral.

Continually being banned by Planet Swans for Porthcawl and then being reinstated.

Yes, that is a fantastic biography and one of the best I have read. Welsh should be remembered as one of Wales' greatest ever sportsmen but is little more than a footnote. Gallimore has done biographies on a couple of other boxers too.

There is also a Freddie Welsh biography by Gareth Harris that came out just before Gallimore's, which is a bit dry and like reading a text book at times, though I don't really mind that.
