An interesting midfield choice 18:32 - Dec 2 with 1815 views9MilesHigh

Happy that Manning is getting game time but we are resting one of our best players to fit him in. Ok, fair enough,

But....

** Smith *** Jay ***
******* Kasey *****

... means we won't be on the ball that much I fear.

Smith needs to step up, not hide and take responsibility and Jay needs to have one of his better days.

But let's see, the Matty haters have got their wish.

I don’t there are any Matty “ haters “

But there are many who don’t appreciate what he does within our team framework. Grimes is a very accomplished midfielder who offers so much whether it’s protecting the back three with his excellent reading of the game or linking things whilst we go forward. Admired by his fellow pros which always says a lot too ....

No cohesion, no possession, no structure.

Our front 3 look lively but there's nothing going on behind them in terms of building up play looking to feed them.

Bidwell on for Smith
Push Manning in the middle
Matty on for Jay (who is going to get sent off if he carries on)

Lets get playing.

I'd get Palmer off he constantly cheats for me when we not got ball he drifts away from his marker so he don't have to dog,,

Alright mate, Kasey needs a game or two to get into the rhythm of how we are playing but he can't be expected to come in when we play Smith and Jay behind him.

I would have left him on but in fairness, Dhanda really got on the ball for us and opened them up.

But this game was lost at 6pm when the team sheet came out. This one is all on Cooper and he should have the guts to admit that.

I don't think Cooper will be admitting anything, he seems a bit like Monk in that regard.

Play Grimes holding and Yan and Palmer in front Saturday.

At home, we need something.

At home, especially at home, and in this league we need to take the brakes off.

Especially as our young ebullient, confidence players like Yan won't have the crowd on their backs.

Yan gave us an edge, proper impact player and could do well against Luton.

Having said that they are battering Norwich and Jones will be up for the tussle.

Subs were needed at half time but I wouldn't have changed the system that has served us so well since last season's break.

Our wing backs still play as wing backs when we go 4 at the back and leave us exposed to the break as we were for the second goal. We were one down and there was no need to change our defensive shape at half time.

They weren't up for a tussle against Cardiff the other day.

I'm not sure we have it in us to put a team to the sword, but we need goals from somewhere if we are to maintain a challenge.

Play Palmer and Yan Saturday, Grimes in behind, Lowe and Ayew up top.

That combo excites and despite being attack minded won't shirk the hard yards to also graft when needed - both Palmer and Dhanda (nowadays) enjoy a bit of niggle.

Ayew will be chomping at the bit to make a statement - he was so frustrated 2nd half.

100% , said this to Risky at the start of the second half

Not only did Cooper make a huge cock up with the midfield 3 he compounded his mistake by trying to re-invent the wheel when we were behind in the game.

We had Manning, with virtually no game time, in a 4 where no doubt all our training drills would mostly be in a 3. And we had Kasey in a 4 man midfield who has also not had hardly any game time with Gyokeres up front, another rookie.

And Boro were there for the taking which makes it all the more galling.

Cooper reverting to type with his go-to formation (pre Wilmot injury which forced his hand to WBs) wasn't an encouraging sign. Didn't seem to be thinking clearly under pressure.

On the other hand it does show he's now willing to mix it up with dramatic change.

I think we missed Bidwell and Nauts, with Grimes orchestrating from the off to set the tone, control and momentum.

(Their #16 was bossing the middle, so missing Grimes was a double whammy)

And compounded the problem by going 4 at the back second half.

It was a horror show from Cooper.

Also we have a squad overloaded with like for like midfielders.
No natural wingers or an out and out striker.
Sometimes we are to predictable.
No flair players
Apart from dhanda who is improving every game

I wouldn't say that really, it's just Cooper has one way of playing and that's that.

DM - Grimes, Fulton
CM - MGW, Fulton, Palmer, Smith, Manning
10 - Dhanda, Palmer, MGW
Wingers - Garrick, Routs, Lowe, isn't Oli Cooper a winger aswell?

I can see his point.

Matty and Jay together I still feel we miss a trick, i'd like both our CM's or DM's whatever you want to call them to have more chemistry than these two.

We are desperate, DESPERATE for MGW to come back, I hope he lives up to the hype and his early season form.

Because since he's been out we have played the triumvirate of Matty, Smith and Jay too much for me. If he's going to insist on two of them then one HAS to be Matty and the third HAS to be Yan or Kasey.

Garrick not ready for me, hope to be proved wrong.

ps it wouldn't do us any harm to train hard in a 451 or 442 or 433 and try to mix it up a bit. We'll soon find out if we have the right mix of players.

Fulton has been our most consistent midfielder and has a bit of go in him. Dhanda is improving and him and Ayew are out only creativity

No I agree with that but I took his post as we haven't got the squad to accommodate playing a different way, my big criticism of Cooper at the moment is how rigid we are from his coaching, I think we have the players to definitely play a different way in more than one formation, am I right in saying we have only seen wingers this year when being one behind?
