There's no DJ primed and ready for advancement. Garrick's playing regularly with Swindon who got thumped today sealing their relegation back to League Two. Whittaker has pace and has shown he can make an impact. Oli Cooper's more of a 10 but played a lot of football out wide with the u23s. Maybe one of the trialists will fit the bill for next season.

A bit of a fallacy, there is more left and middle of the road than right. Which makes this a democratic balance. I see you prefer No wingers and a compact midfield ?

Wouldn't even need a targetman. Crosses can be hard and low into the box too. But your first line is key. We've had wingers under Cooper and to a man they've all looked a bit lost.

You are right but we would need a number 9 who gets in the box, like we have on loan in previous seasons. Currently our front players play wide and its the wing backs who seem to get on the end of crosses.
| When it comes to out and out wingers on 08:37 - Apr 25 with 854 views | Thornburyswan | For me it’s more about pace rather than out & out wingers, one of our many problems going forward is we have limited ability to break on teams as other than Lowe we have no fast ball forward option so when the opposition’s attack breaks down or we Nick the ball we rarely have an out ball & end up going sideways or backwards allowing the opposition to get back into position & hence difficult to break down. You can achieve that with wingers (like DJ) but also an inside forward or 10 with pace plus either wing backs or central midfielders who can support the break & have a decent enough engine to get them back if/when it breaks down. In reality not many teams play with wingers these days, more wide forwards who can ideally go past defenders & have pace. | | | |

My favourite Dyer PL moment was in our first home game against Man Utd in the PL. He absolutely tormented Patrice Evra during the first half, and would have done the same in the second had Fergie not hooked him a couple of minutes in. When he was good, he was very, very good. Pity his last year at the club was wasted under Cooper.

Agree with that. Despite his size, a poacher like Cullen would get on the end of decent crosses a few times a season.

He could have done that for any premier league club at the time imo. And if he was elsewhere would have got international caps.

Garrick seems to be playing every week for a struggling Swindon team featuring as forward winger and wingback if BBC reports are anything to go by. He has proved for the first time he can have a run of 20 games without have some sort of muscle prroblem. This is good news. I thought he was on his way out but has a new deal. He had a good spell last season coming on and adding pace and trickery. Hopefully he is a slow burner. Having two swift Jamican forwards who have natural Jamican sprinting pace and the skills to match could be very useful. The infusion of 5 x u23 trialists has shunted 17 year olds back into to the u18 teams and both sides are getting better results. Quite exciting to see a 15 year old on a goal burst for the u18. Swansea needs prodigies preferavbe local ones.

Second half at Reading he proved that, very unlucky not to score, we haven’t seen that sort of timing and run in to the box for ages. He will be a very important player next season.

If we’re talking the type that never leave the touch line, run at fullbacks and whip crosses in, then pretty much none. If we’re talking the likes of Dyer and Sinclair at their best, then plenty. I’m sure Lowe could revert to that if we played with a central striker. Garrick definitely.

Was watching a clip of Thierry Henry on Twitter earlier on and one of the talking heads made a good point. He basically reinvented the role of winger. The old style type that you mention in your first sentence started dying out as a species not long after when the possibility of a forward who could drift wide but also back into the centre became known.

Well, I don't know which we're talking about either because I didn't start the topic. But I'd guess from the words "out and out" that they mean the old-fashioned type that stuck to the touchline and put in crosses for a big centre forward. They don't exist anymore. Otherwise we're talking about the likes of Dan James who is basically just a player who has lots of pace.

I agree. I can just about remember when almost every team played 442, at least one of the strikers was a targetman and wingers were either pacy, tricky or both. They didn’t need to be able to drift inside, just skin the fullback, get a cross in and jog back. Absolutely right, that type of winger seems like a relic now and I hadn’t thought of it, but yeah, Henry may well have redefined the role.

Proper wingers, the touchline hugging mud splattered, socks down crowd favourite. There’s a few in non league. The game has changed a lot, but Nathan was the best. Overall Leighton James for me was superb, in modern times Nathan, followed by Montero, Narsingh, Barrow, don’t forget Paul Anderson, Joey Beauchamp, there are others. But for me Nathan was the very best, a real fans favourite.
