| Lionel Messi 18:31 - Aug 11 with 1079 views | Catullus | I saw him giving an presser on tv, crying because he had to leave Barca because they couldn't afford his contract. He loves them sooooo much apparently. Now he's signed on a well paid deal with PSG. The bloke is absolutely stinking rich, he was getting over 25 million per year for at least the last 5 years, he's worth over 300 million and PSg are paying him 620k per week, 29.7 million per year. If a bloke with his much money loves a club all that much, why can't he play for them for nothing? Why does he need another ludicrously large pay day? Isn't 300 million enough for him? But of course it's not about the money. Well it is for Barca, reportedly 1.1 billion in debt because they have paid out so much more than they have coming in. How does a club like Barca end up so much in debt? No wonder they are so much in favour of the Euro super league, so they can pay these very rich footballers even bigger wages. Is that why Liverpool are so much in favour, so Salah et al can have another 20k per week? People wonder why I happier to be entertained than to get promoted. It's because the Premier league stinks of greed and getting there is a poisoned chalice. Maybe I'll be happier with it when the big clubs go Euro league? | |

| Lionel Messi on 19:43 - Aug 11 with 993 views | Dr_Winston | There's some sort of rule or law within Spanish football that prevents any player from being offered a contract more than 50% lower in value than their last one. Barca offered him that, he accepted, but they still couldn't make the numbers work within the financial restrictions Barca are under. So basically he can't play for free. Even if he wanted to. That’s true, however there are charitable things he could have done. | |

No doubt, but he couldn't have done them whilst under contract at Barca. Short of getting rid of basically every other player they had on significant wages, he wasn't staying there. Nobody comes out of this looking particularly good. Barca have taken the piss financially for years. Not quite as much as Real, but both clubs have spent far too much given the relative financial weakness of La Liga. Messi certainly didn't pause for too long before signing a contract that paid him £2m a week whether the team he claimed to love could afford it or not. Wages all across the board are far too high. Agents have too much power. FIFA and UEFA couldn't care less as long as the TV rights money keeps rolling in. Football is a mess.

| Lionel Messi on 20:00 - Aug 11 with 958 views | londonlisa2001 | He couldn’t sign for them. Wasn’t allowed to take more than 50% pay cut and they couldn’t afford 50% under the ‘maximum salaries as a percentage of income’ rule without getting rid of loads of players at less than value which would have bankrupted them. In this case, he really isn’t being hypocritical. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Or as our local paper reported, he could have signed in a six month contract at the minimum amount he could, then on another at less than at 50% less again. And so on. I think the case is they didn’t want him anymore.

Couldn’t he have signed a 2 month contract at 50% of his current earning then signed another one for 50% of the new one?

No idea. Suspect there's a "minimum contract length" requirement in there too.

Ok, if the law is THEY can't offer him such a contract, how about if they didn't offer him anything but he offered them the deal? I don't know if that works under Spanish law but usually, where there's a will, there's a way.

It would have broken their maximum salary limit according to the numbers reported. Which is done on a rolling basis. Largely to prevent the circumstances the paper suggests I imagine. You may well be right that they didn’t want to do what was needed though. That airjordan shirt with the number 30 will shift in some numbers I would think…

| Lionel Messi on 23:39 - Aug 11 with 733 views | majorraglan | The money in football is unreal and obscene. I have very little sympathy for Barcelona or Real Madrid, they’ve both been sat at a very privileged table and enjoyed all sorts of beneficial treatment. They’ve both spent huge amounts of cash on players, there’s been some poor decision making and huge money spent on players who jst weren’t worth the money - they are reaping what they’ve sowed. | | | |

Easy enough to take the money and donate it back to the club I'd have thought not that it would ever happen of course. I lost all interest in 'star players' or for that matter any other players whether they stay, come or go after hearing details of the wage and other demands from Swans players and their agents several years ago from an inside source at the club. Since that time I never get worked up about players leaving the club and just watch whoever turns out who is still there whether an old ageing pro or a young fresh faced kid from the youth team. Believe me the money grabbers that are professional footballers are really not worth getting yourself worked up about. If we're putting out a team of 18 year olds in Division two thats fine for me compared to worrying about some money grabbing 'our current best player' demanding an outrageous unaffordable new deal.

I agree. If Barca were honest they'd just admit they can't win the CL with Messi these days and can't win LA Liga either. So they were better off cutting ties. Messi is an outstanding player but at 34 his best days are obviously behind him. Same scenario when CR left Madrid. Was no longer ginna offer enough at the wages he wanted.
