Passed a referees course once. That does not make him a qualified referee unless he registers with his local FA every year plus, actually referees every season and attends law changes updates regularly.

Right. So, what do you need to be to register as you have stated ?

It has changed immensely since he passed his course no doubt and for the last 15 years you have to referee at least 6 matches as part of your course which are assessed. You have to referee every season. It is a bit like someone claiming to be a qualified mathematician just because they passed an exam at 16.

What a load of bollards. He is a class one, qualified referee. He can officiate at any game as long as the federation approves. For payment he has to prove competence, but only “If” this is at the highest level. There is only a qualification level to reach so Warnock could ‘have’ entered the system when he first ‘qualified’ at an allocated level. And that requires nothing that you reference. Fitness tests, law changes etc are not requirements to remain a qualified referee, they are courses all referees at the highest levels need to attend, that doesn’t make you not a referee. The site owner here is correct. I’m unsure why you deemed it necessary to make this an issue. This is a subject close to my heart. I know this as a qualified referee of 17 years. Welsh FA licensed and know for a fact that anyone can referee a game this weekend who has a whistle and a pair of boots at entry levels.

So you remain a qualified referee but at a certain level need to gain competencies ?

I’ve no doubt things change all the time Felix. To compare your point on mathematicians. If someone passes a driving test at the age of 17, and becomes a qualified driver, they will always be a qualified driver. Not a qualified racing driver, but a qualified driver all the same. To become a qualified racing driver you have to pass other competencies. But I’m pretty certain they will remain a qualified driver 😉

Don’t they retain their original driving licence ? The one they get when they pass their initial driving test ?

You clearly do not know what you are talking about. He is certainly not a class 1 referee Current referee rankings International Select group 1 PL Select group 2 EFL championship Level 1 EFl 1 + 2 Level 2a National league and PL EFL assistant referees Level 2b National league North & South Level 3 Contributory leagues Level 4 Supply league Level 5 Senior County league Level 6 County league Level 7 Junior referee Level Y8 Youth Level 9 Trainee Level 10 Declated not active (retired) To may knowledge he has never refereed at any level other than a junior or County level so at best could not have ever been more than class 6 or 7. It is likely when he first pass his course there were only three classes 1,2,3 and in Wales it was A, B C. I was also a qualified referee and a lot longer than you having qualified in 1972 as a class C in Wales rising to class A then moving to England as an old class 1 referee and a class 4 under the new system before retiring after 40 years service. I have not made an issue of this just point out it is wrong to call him a qualified referee.
