What I don't understand from the facts is how people were put on full pay and not expected to work when they could be working from home. It does not take too much effort these days to set up remote working?

I agree with your comments about being able to set up remote working, the place I worked for had very few people working from home at the start of the pandemic and they were able to change things quite quickly as were numerous other organisations.

I think this has been subject of previous comment, but I suspect the DVLA / Department of Transport haven’t invested in the IT or don’t have the capability to equip people to work from home.
Two years on, the DVLA senior managers need to be grilled to see what measures they have put in place to enable remote working - this should have been in place ages ago and these staff who may be too vulnerable to come work should be contributing and working.

It’s worth pointing out that the DVLA have staff to Covid, including a contributor to this site. People with significant health issues they may not be able to come back in to the work environment, but those numbers should now be very low with the vaccine programme.
There is a lot of help out there from organisations such as the Shaw Trust and I can’t see any reason why people who are vulnerable can’t be given the tools to work from home, the DVLA management have to answer those questions. Some will be wining the lead, but equally others will be genuine cases.

Some actual journalism!
Rare these days.

The DVLA is a disgrace and shames Swansea.

Good job you’re not there then because based on the bits I’ve read, it’s potentially the case that a lot of those people mentioned in the article would be protected by the Equality Act as they have disabilities, sack them and we’d be talking compensation running in to millions and millions.

All for sorting these people out and getting them contribute and do some work, but you can’t ride roughshod over employment law legislation.

The bottom line here is these people should be working from home and doing a full days work, end of and DVLA managers should be ensuring this is taking place.

I know a HGV driver who has been waiting 3 months for his licence back. He has been unable to work during that time. No pay.
Disgusting.

Sack them all. If compensation has to be paid so be it.
The dvla needs people who will actually do some work. Surely not to much to ask for.

Why would they be due any compensation? They are not fulfilling their end of the contract...it doesn't all flow one way. They will have signed a contract that required them to meet certain expectations.

It is the managers who need sacking first.
How have they allowed this situation to develop?
Utterly incompetent.

The CEO at the DVLA should be held to account and provide the answers. In most places the members of staff would have been given a lap top, a secure network link and told to get on with it. Now if the DVLA Dept of Transport weren’t for example prepared to supply lap tops or couldn’t source them or the DVLA IT networks are so bad it couldn’t cope with the network traffic that’s not the fault of the staff.
It wouldn’t be the staffs fault if the requirement for social distancing couldn’t be achieved nor would it be the fault of staff if a blown air heating and ventilating system didn’t have any suitable filters to removed Covid from the air it was recirculating - because I doubt there are windows which open and close in the DVLA tower block to ventilate the premises.

I dislike shirkers as much as you do and am not protecting them, I am just pointing out iota not always as straight forward as it seems and that there are other factors at play. The first point of call needs to be the directors at the DVLA and the DOT.

Personal story. My wife works in a hospital and her best friend works in the DVLA. On her friend's do in a local Swansea restaurant with all her DVLA colleagues, about 6 months ago, My wife reluctantly went and had to endure the group whining that they didn't feel safe in work and how their health was being compromised and how the union should call a strike. All the time they were in a restaurant unmasked alongside other public groups. These same people had been off, as described, on full pay furloughed. It is a disgrace.

This is informative...The DVLA is a major employer here! I hope this does not end up with its break-up or relocation hundreds of miles outside of West Glamorgan. There seems to be a lot of outrage and anger from this.

If the Govt was ever of a mind to Privatise/Relocate DVLA services then they're certainly not giving them any reasons to do otherwise.

Many (not all) have provided the government with THE perfect excuse to relocate or at the very least have parts of it broken up and moved elsewhere. The tax office by the train station was subject to closure and being moved elsewhere away from Swansea, so the civil service can be restructured if needs be?

Respect to the ones in the DVLA that stayed at their desks, perhaps they were thinking along the same lines i.e. future repercussions.

Indeed, a case of giving the government the perfect 'excuse' i.e. providing 'safer' working : condition/environment/working space should there be another future pandemic. or Covid mutation....The lack of common sense of some DVLA staff and their union is staggering!

No doubt whatsoever heads would have rolled!

The sheer Kamikazee stupidity of the union and others to state that the place is still not safe and no longer safe to work in. That gives the government the perfect excuse to relocate under the guise of "health and safety". Is it any wonder many DVLA employees were reluctant to strike also?

I wonder if the government may in future (*cough, cough. cough*) take a more caring (NOT!) attitude and say "we're with you on this one Mr and Mrs Union Leader, so its off to more suitable Covid -safe English offices you all go".

I hope current and future generations of West Glamorgan citizens do not suffer from future reorganisation(s). After all the DVLA is one of the few good employers left down these parts!

My company has a union and they are very sensible with a hands off approach and letting the business people make the correct decisions. We are suffering as a result of the pandemic but we are still afloat because the union did not rock the boat with rank stupidity.
