Joe Allen still not released by Stoke City 11th May 2022 12:12
Swansea City will already know that Joe Allen is today having new contract talks with his club Stoke City. Already officially endorsed as a big plus for the current swans squad by Russell Martin recently it seems that the potters are looking at retaining him. Or attempting to. 0

I would like to see him back as I think he could still do a more than an adequate job at this level and what a fitting end to his professional playing career going nearly full circle.

Matt no, but there are a couple of small connections

Are we, again, being used as a bargaining chip? A suggestion I’ve heard and seen a few times now.
If he gets what he wants in Stoke he'll stay - if not he'll either to us or someone else.

Desperate is probably the wrong word. But it was his most favourable option and he was disappointed when it didn’t happen.

If Joey wanted to play for Swansea in 2016 or whenever he would have done so. He was the master of his own destiny. Joey voluntarily went to Stoke for £13m at the behest of Liverpool FC. There was an £8m deal on the table for him at Swansea with some money left in the deal to give Joey and nice package. It was not acceptable in August 2016 but would have been more appealing in January 2019.

You keep parroting this nonsense despite it making no logic and being disproved repeatedly.

Stoke offered Liverpool more money than we did. We wouldn't match their offer (or commit to a tidy bid before the Euros). Liverpool aren't going to accept a lower offer from us are they? And without Liverpool's acceptance the player can't join us. This really isn't complicated.

Huw scrimped on the fee and we suffered as a result. Not what you want to hear but those are the facts. Spoken by Allen himself and I think even Huw has mentioned it being a regret.

Now however, with him being out of contract imminently the decision is entirely on him and no club can stop him joining who he wants.

Wasnt it all in place pre euro 2016 for around 8m but Huw said he would review it after the euros, he went on and had a superb tournament and his value went up?

So the story goes, club had agreed all with his agent but when it came to agreeing a fee with Liverpool....read the above.

Is that how it went?

Yes that's roughly how I remember it. We failed to bid high enough to get him before the Euros (sure there were stories around saying Liverpool were asking for just a little bit more) and following a successful tournament Stoke trumped our bid which was obviously outdated and inferior.

Yes Allen said on the longmans podcast, personal terms agreed with us.

I think it was more a case of the sell outs wanting to keep the books in order before the sale to the yanks went through.

You have bought into the fake narrative provided for you by others. £8m was enough. All Joey had to do was sit tight. Liverpool forced him out and he did not need to sign anything with Stoke or anyone else for that matter.

He was costing them £1.2m a month in wages and lost transfer fee money.

Sit tight and do what?

Wait for Liverpool to accept our inferior bid?

£8mill was patently not enough, if had been he'd have joined us and before the Euros too.

I play chess. A game of strategy and timing. Liverpool and mighty club were in a weak negotiating position and Joey played their game not Swansea game. Had Joey wanted to come to Swansea his agent would have worked out a suitable strategy.

It was not enough in August 2016 but more than enough in January 2017.

Affectively going on strike and trying to force a move a to club that is offering a lesser transfer fee than another (and is dithering) is not a suitable strategy when under contract at a big club like Liverpool. It's completely unrealistic.

The swans should have bid more, but Huw was too cautious too. He's admitted it himself. It's that simple.

What on earth does 2018 or 2019 have to do with it?

Liverpool did not offer Joey a new deal and were forcing him out early. . He was at liberty to full-fill his contract.

Narsingh was offered a loan to Greece but would not reduce his wages and sat out his contract. What you are staying is you can do that to Swansea but not to Liverpool. Bunkum I say. Unlike Narsingh Joey would always give his best.

Liverpool would rapidly understand Joeys point of view if he refused to go to Stoke. He was costing them £1m a month.

It was not Huw's fault that Joey preferred to go to Stoke rather than force a move to Swansea. He will I expect, not come to Swansea this time either.

- they were not 'forcing him out' actually. If you do some research you'll see that it was actually Allen asked to leave well before this time and Liverpool reluctantly let him go after making plans for a replacement.

- Narsingh at Swansea going out on loan isn't remotely comparable with the Allen situation.

- So again you're putting the onus and blame on Allen not refusing to go to Stoke when Liverpool had accepted an offer for them that was larger than ours. Which is fantasy land. Again if you'd done some research you'd know there was also interest from other clubs such as Southampton making this theory laughable. He's a professional but Liverpool aren't going to let him dictate to them (at cost) who he's going to join.

- it was because of Huws lowball offer that Allen wasn't given the opportunity to come to us. It was a gamble that didn't pay off. He didn't bid high enough to tempt Liverpool before the Euros and after a successful tournament there were higher offers. So Liverpool accepted their offer and not our lower offer that Huw had refused to increase despite him having a great Euros.

- I know you refuse to ever apportion blame on Huw for anything but he himself has laid out the situation like this citing his caution over bidding higher. A fact collaborated by Allen's version of events (and every other rational observer).

Liverpool refused to pick him and were pushing him to the door. It is common knowledge that these days payers do not have to go anywhere at the selling clubs discretion. Swansea could not shift Ayew until he had completed his contract. Having squeezed all the juice out of the orange he was gone in a flash.

Allen could easily have sat tight. Players do it all the time. He had leverage and chose not to use it. 2016 Euros was over and he deserved a rest.

Roque Mesa did the same thing he dictated to Swansea that he was going to Sevilla (not Fulham) and no where else. Swansea did a deal. They had to.

Allen put out that he was keen to return to Swansea and has done it again. Que new deal at Stoke. Good idea blame WInter.

- What you mean they refused to pick him? He left Liverpool during a summer transfer window. He'd played in 9 of Liverpool's last 10 games of the previous season? As I told you it was Allen that asked to leave.

- Like Allen if we'd received a high enough bid for Ayew he'd have left.

- what leverage did he have? He'd only have leverage if we'd have offered a higher fee, which we didn't. He deserved a rest? What are you on about now? He played for Stoke from the start of that season playing every game that August!?

- Yes Swansea did the deal because we're a much smaller club and Mesa was not wanted by our current manager and had a long contract to run. Very different situation to Liverpool and Allen who hadn't been shunned but was still being used.

- Has Allen said he wants to return then? Is anyone blaming Winter? Or are you making things up again?

Please let it go Res.
Repeating the old "What Allen did next" saga is pointless.
Regarding his current situation at Stoke, it apparently was Stoke who announced in March they were releasing him ?
If they have had a change of heart and are offering him a new deal, that is their prerogative, as he is still technically their player until his contract runs out ?
No one's to blame though.
Just up to Allen to decide where he wants to finish his career
