Oli Cooper in with a chance to play for the first team next season 10th May 2022 11:28
Twenty two year old Oli Cooper a Swansea City youth product who has also appeared for the under 18 and 23 sides is very much in Russell Martin’s thoughts this week. He has just returned to the swans after a very successful loan spell at Newport County. 1

It always feels better when there are up to 3 home grown products. Cabango and two others. Brandon Cooper Ollie Cooper and Garrick as useful utility back up to dd pace at Wing back winger of forward.

Wise sage since Toshack era

Yes but Garrick is not home grown.

What happened with Aneurin Livermore? Just seen he's been released. Looked outstanding early in the season but no sign of him recently.

I called him home grown not local. He has been associated with Swansea for 7 season from the age of 16. (now 23). He learned his football at Swansea. He is home grown.

That is a lot of investment in a player with the physical attributes to succeed. The moment he delivers Martin wants him out it seems. Its a tough competitive business. A player with soft tissue injuries who is now starting to deliver with 50 games under his belt this season.

Martin ran out of players .Garrick offers versatility and can play 3 different positions off the bench with height and speed that Korey Smith does not have at all when Cabango went off. He can also nick a goal or assist.

I only saw Garrick play wingback for Plymouth once but he was completely lost there. Their manager seemed to agree as he played the vast majority of his football as part of a two up front. Their fans aren't sold on him in League One even in that position. Nice lad and I wish him the best but at 24 it's probably best he move on and continue playing regular football. There's quite a few of our youngsters in the same boat.

Nobody who joins at 16 is home grown.

Somebody else has done the hatd work by then.
This is ‘body snatching’.
Dan James another example.

Can be profitable, but think Kenji and Gregor for balance.

You will be calling Andre home grown next, ffs.

Joe Rodon, Roberts, Macca, Ben, Allen etc are home grown.
Lets not cheapen the term.

Cabango was 15 when he joined iirc. Garrick 17. Ollie 11 or 12, born in England. Cullen 8.

There's a lot of scope for different "home grown" classifications if you're into that sort of thing. Some fans still like to claim McBurnie as an academy product and he was 19 when he turned up in his short socks.

Garrick came as a gangly kid from a rugby League background at 17. He had the physical attributes of height speed and athleticism. These are things Swansea currently lack. Garrick was training at Swansea city every day for 4 or 5 seasons but dogged by muscle injuries.

He has beefed up and now a more resilient footballer than the one that played 14 games for Steve Cooper. If he was good enough raw 21 year old to play for Cooper. 2 years later with 70 games under his belt and stronger he deserves his chance at 23. He provided the the assist for another underrated player Goykeres's only Swansea goal in the FA cup at Stevenage.
