| Camper Van Wlld Camping 22:52 - Jan 9 with 2287 views | STID2017 | So I am looking to make more use of my camper van. Anyone do wild camping ? If so what are your favourite spots in South or West Wales Preferably near a beach or river etc with pub nearby ? | |

I’ve seen a few camper vans parked up on Burry Port harbour and at St David’s beach, but I’m sure the council and National Park will be monitoring as they “don’t like” camera vans and caravans pitching overnight. One option could be to join the Caravan Club and use their network of Certified Locations, they’re small sites which can hold a maximum of 5 units, they tend to be in fields or pub car parks.

Thanks very much for the info. Yes in a couple of the organised Clubs plus a couple online also. Nice sometimes though just to drive, find a lovely spot as long as you, as they say " Leave only footprints and take only pictures"

Newgale, & Freshwater East in west Wales are popular although not really wild . I 'm always drawn to the sea rather than inland but I have travelled across to the east coast to Maplethorpe etc to take pics of the resident seal colony etc which is pretty wild and around exposed but well worth the trip, and much further north into Dumfries towards and onwards to Castle Douglas there are some spectacular views and the lack of light pollution makes the night skies amazing .Thats the beauty of this country , you don't need to go far to enjoy the divesity of either the coast or countryside. I've been looking at buying a tent box to fit onto the roof of my car ,which literally pops up when you need to use it , although not as practical as a van I have a 4x4 , so enough room in the back for camping equipment etc me and the tent to kip in and your footprint is basically just the car .

Sound like some great places there. Thanks Fancy doing the Scottish NC500 maybe later this year or next year. Had this van since July and due to several reasons ( including breaking my foot playing football ) my plans have been curtailed. So want to kickstart the year and make the most of my free time ( around the Swans fixtures, plus my partner's shift pattern. I am lucky to be a man of leisure ) I did Scotland a few times with my late wife including on the shores of Loch Ness ( no sightings sadly ) so look forward to exploring more up there

That is excellent. If you have the opportunity it is worth attending the camping show at the NEC in February. Depending on your wants and needs and budget, some brilliant ideas to be had

You can park in a local secure storage unit specifically for RV's and caravans, works out about £300-£350 a year and knocks a large chunk off your annual insurance.

We have somewhere we could store one within 400 yards.I don’t fancy leaving a vehicle unused for extended times . We hired one for the TdF and it was ok but it’s rather cramped an environment and not really private as we like it. The concept is lovely though . Good luck to STID anyway

My current van is a short wheel base Ford Transit ( like the VW in my avatar but without the pop top So drives and parks virtually like a car, only with a home in the back Thanks for the recommendations

When you say wild camping ,would you not feel vulnerable stuck at the side of the road,on a lake shore, river bank etc. Many places won’t allow camping if this nature. I recall seeing some on French beaches thinkin* ,what lucky bastards. Not the same here .

Believe it or not before this, I had a new motorhome that cost silly money. I stored it in J43 secure lockup. Cost £400 a year. To park on the drive of my new house ( i moved from a house with no drive ) cost just £25 extra on the insurance ! So saved £375 So if convenient the park at home. TBH if they want your van they will and have stolen them from these secure insurance approved places too

Theres a few groups on social media that may help you. leave no trace make no noise is the rule, Powys car parks allow one night overnight stay .

Up until last autumn Oxwich beach (privately owned) were allowing vans like mine to park overlooking the beach. Would have been perfect. Sadly some idiots started doing and dealing drugs down there ( on a beautiful day in front of families ! ) Police were called and the owners changed their policy I have done wild camping before but usually look for somewhere with at least a couple of vans, cars, etc otherwise as you say can be a bit nervewracking

I was going to say Powys car parks but wasn't sure if they have changed the rule. Look at the map Powys is massive and covers most of mid Wales.

As a safety precaution when wild camping see if you can fit a ratchet strap between both front door armrests overnight.

Powys is great yes ! Stayed in Builth and Llandridnod and had a few drinks and food nearby. The one thing I was made aware of after a nasty accident up North involving a motorhomer three times over the limit driving the morning after the night before (I saw it on Facebook), is to always make sure I am legally safe to drive on the next day. I fear many are not

We did the NC500 a couple of years ago, we allowed about 8 days but it wasn’t enough. I’d defo recommend it.
