Rugby is in a terrible mess.
Rugby is often more exciting to watch than football. If it had a more global following it would be the bigger sport. But at the real base level, jumpers as goal posts, it needs too many players to compete with the simplicity of football.
It should take a lead from cricket and adapt to make a bigger focus on things like 7s, which appeal to a wider audience to generate revenue.
Regular 7s tournaments involving tbe big clubs in international tournaments could generate a lot more interest

Worcester were first, Wasps got kicked from the top tier to the bottom one, a drop of 11 leagues...and now Irish... but there will always be up and coming English clubs with a local backing to take over from them.

and thats before we look at the game in Wales, which is even worse.

In Wasps and Irish cases it’s a huge history being dismantled.

I went up to watch Worcester Warriors a few years ago with friends as 1 of group had a family connection with the club. I have to say I was really impressed with the set up, good stadium, lots of corporate stuff and a few bars for the masses to drink during the game - the place was packet out. Can’t comment on the finances, but I was surprised when they went bust.

English Rugby..living above their means. Sarries might be okay but the rest...not sure. Some French sides have wealth, allegedly.

There’s a lot of cash in French rugby, Toulouse are the big spenderscand had a budget of €43m this season, Perpignan and Brive had the smallest budgets at around €19m - no rises for guessing who won the league and who finished in the bottom 2. Even the second division, Pro D2 is fully professional.

I know someone involved in the game out there and it’s at a different level to the U.K.

Very true Keith.

People have suggested London Welsh should be the WRU’s 5th regional side.
Not sure the money is there though if these two giants have gone

Let's not forget the massive history some of the Welsh clubs had to. Okay technically they are still there but not in elite form.

Always a shame when clubs go under.
In the Welsh regions case, perhaps people should attend games more often. Ospreys and Dragons with 4-6000 crowds is awful. They need more through the gate to survive.
It’s no good people attending Wales games a couple of times a year in their jeans and shiny shoes, and then forgetting the regions and grass roots clubs.
Eventually it won’t add up.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

People only go to internationals for the beer these days. You see it on tv, people full up and not watching the game but watching the screens to see if their on tv.

The support just isn't there to maintain the wages these players demand.

Football has been going this way for ages, the number of clubs with mony troubles now is scary. It's time people faced the truth and did something about it otherwise in another 30 years the "big" clubs will be the only choice for many people.

Rugby has tried to be bigger than it is, bigger than it can be. The regional thing was a massive mistake or at least was badly designed and implemented.

All sport needs to cut its cloth. Players/competitors don't deserve to be muti millionaires after 3-4 years working, reality has to hit home some time.

Why should people attend games more if they find the product stultifyingly boring?

It a very simple and obvious formula.

Attract pitifully low attendances whilst paying employees ludicrously high wages = go bust.

Swansea City supporters of all groups of fans must surely know all about that?

Inevitable Rugby clubs have been paying their players to much for years in England and of course Wales.

its bonkers that small village clubs pay the players at all and there are a hell of a lot in Wales that do, the rise and fall of Tonmawr being the perfect example but there are many more

Being a regular attendee of local parks rugby I predict that it will be just about finished inside 5 or 6 years,

Mind you the most important thing of course is that those Well paid executives of the WRU continue to get paid whilst the game continues to collapse around their ears.

As a outsider of the sport looking in, I never understood how they could afford the wages of the players despite help from the unions. Half the home games of football, half the crowds or less and paying more players with 23 match day squads and that's without amount of other players used because of injuries and international call ups.

Even when you know, you never know?

It’s worrying for sure and I agree with you totally.
That said, association football is morally bankrupt and financially immoral.

Don’t get me started on Speedway .

it's not just rugby, the local football leagues have faded quite a bit.

30 years ago we had 5 dvsions and 7 reserve divisions on saturdays and 7 divisions on Sunday. Now there is no Sunday league and the saturday league is half that size, maybe not even that big, I lost track.

The junior football league in Neath has only 7 teams at under 14 level.

Kids are getting their fun elsewhere, online, on their E scooters and bikes, tiktok, youtube or even preferring to play sport online. In fact there is a growing support for E gaming and people actually pay to watch it. The top E gamers make a very good living, some are millionaires before 25
