Are Swansea managers supported properly. You bet they are. 16:10 - Jun 21 with 1841 viewsReslovenSwan1

A personal view point. Posted yesterday but deserving of its own thread.

COOPER - Action he sulked in January. Leaves in Summer

Assertion - "Shafted" (no centre forward)

Reality - Had £15-£ 20m Sporting Lisbon bound Viktor Goykeres. Available for £1m but apparently wanted the much inferior Keenan Davis. He preferred Jamal Lowe who did very well. Cooper sent Goykeres back.

My Assessment - NOT SHAFTED

POTTER Action January sulk Leaves in Summer

Assertion - "Shafted" (no midfield dynamo)

Reality. He wanted Levien to give him £7m for Ryan Woods after Brentford upped their price. Potters previous spending was wretched Asoro, John, McKay (yes McKay) and Celina (£7m) . Potter has gone to a new level of waste at Chelsea. ("nothing to do with me Guvnor?") Woods bombed. Stoke paid up and he left on a free. Byers just as good.

My Assessment - NOT SHAFTED

MARTIN Action he sulked in January. Leaves in Summer

Assertion - "Shafted" (no centre forward)

Reality. Martin was forced to play Liam Cullen who did very well scoring 8 goals now linked with other clubs. Martin accepted he did not perform well and took too long to get out of a personal slump. Grant is considered a lucky escaped. £24k a week for a player considered lazy by WBA fans is a good result. Ogbene and Kay are now available for free saving £3m +. The £3m can be offered in wages and inducements if appropriate.

My Assessment - NOT SHAFTED

Cooper and Potter when left unrestricted have wasted perhaps £100m+ of their clubs money recently. £5m wasted on Lingaard alone. Fat guys at the open buffet I called it. They needed to be reined in for their own good

Operational costs of £40m on an income of £20m in Russell's first season. People (not just fans, media and pundits as well) have a crazy idea of what "proper" support of a manager at this level looks like. Even buying and selling a Downes a year we'd come up far short of sustainable.

It's a manager's job to always ask for more and look for ways to improve the squad, and it's the club's job to tell them no when we can't afford it. There should always be tension there (imo) if everyone's working well. But every manager seems to hit that point where the media is convinced they're one straw away from walking out because they didn't get x, y or z. Which may well be true of course, but it's not the type of behaviour we should want from our managers.

Bang on.

As has been said repeatedly, no manager coming in here can claim to be unaware of how the club is run, what sort of budget that they have to work with, and the likelihood of needing to balance purchases with sales. Talk of them somehow being "let down" is, and always has been, nonsense. Especially in the case of Russell Martin who had a playoff capable squad all along, but through his own arrogance failed to utilise them properly until it was too late.

Unfortunately football supporters, being the spoiled children that most of them are, can't grasp the simple figures that you've laid out there and seem to think that there should be a bottomless pile of "investment" for any manager to spend.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Goykeres was terrible here. His first season at Coventry wasn’t much better. A late bloomer.

Cooper was well within his rights to ask for a striker that January. Instead he was given two duds from across the pond and still managed to fall just short.

Viktor needed around 15 games to bed in and produce.

Mark Robbins saw his potential and developed him.

Steve Cooper did not see his potential and may not have been interested in next season for Swansea as he had already visualised leaving.

Jordan Morris is not a dud. He just got injured just like Gibb White did. Bad luck. The Columbus Crew forward gave Rodon and Mepham a serious haircut the other day.

Dyer comes from a time when 20k a week was nothing.

He really doesn’t know how a football club is run.

Little Nath, bless him, despite being a club legend and one of my all time favourite players is talking out of his arse here unfortunately.

Also demonstrates the generally rubbish standard of sports writing these days to unquestioningly repeat and even double down on such obvious nonsense.

And Owain Tudor Jones has jumped on the same bandwagon again this morning.

I have already listed the players brought in during Martins time elsewhere and that doesn't include the Loans such as Wolf, Cundle ,Oxo Flex,Rhys Williams, Finn Stevens,
Players bought such as Natchm,Obafemi,Piroe,Walsh ,Ogebeta ,club rather than manager/coach choices

How it can be said Martin wasnt backed in the transfer market is absurd. All the focus is the lack of activity in January and as was demonstrated in the last 10 games the squad was capable of delivering when set up properly and during that period we were missing Allen and Fulton for a few games due to suspension and injury.

So what if Martin has learned to be a little more pragmatic, set up differently and play like we did for the last 10 games, do Southampton have a chance? Or will he revert back to the project football?

IT will be interesting to see, but remember in his first season here he changed tactics after a rough patch similar to what we saw from the Milwall game on this last season but then reverted to his vision when he was "out of trouble", he stared to revert again towards the end of last season during games once we were on top

TIme will tell if Martin practices what he preaches about iterative learning

Depends whether his common sense can override his ego.

He will be desperate to be proven right in his process. It'll be nagging at him if he doesn't, but even he can't be stupid enough not to grasp how much better performances and results were when we stopped doing it.

If I had to gamble I suspect he'll try it again, but maybe with more width. Like us in 2022 with Wolf and Christie. Problem is we were just as rubbish defensively and our form at the end of the season wasn't great either.
