Reading that ,Comprehensive schools,makes me reflect on my Grammar schools days.
I would suggest a good 75% of my male teachers were full on sadists who taught by fear alone. The Head enjoyed,clearly, beating boys ,especially the 1st and 2nd yr lads who were terrified of him.He died and there was almost applause when his sudden death was announced at assemply. I still recall that 54 yrs later. I hope he went to Burning Hell immediately.
This was know as disciplining pupils.
