Historical averages for promotion from the Championship 13:48 - Mar 20 with 1620 viewsDr_Parnassus

Had a look at this just now, seems we may get very unlucky this year that there is 4 teams pushing each other.

Average points needed to finish:-

1st) 94 pts
2nd) 87 pts
...................
3rd) 82.6 pts
4th) 78.4 pts
5th) 75.9 pts
6th) 73.8 pts

We are on 69 points already, with 10 games left. Which means if we keep our 36 game form going into the last 10 games we finish on 88 points.

I’m not completely convinced that will be enough this year.

I think that second place is going to need over 90 this year

Because the average is just over 87pts I think it's something like 10 of the 16 seasons that have been played in the championship that 87 pts would not be good enough to be promoted automatically, last season was low scoring, the previous 6 seasons on the trot before that a minimum of 89pts was required.

That's the problem with averages, common sense tells you that some ofthe time you need a higher number and some of the time a lower number will be enough.

Our form up til now isn't a great barometer either. We have been in poor form but still picked up some points. Maybe after the break our form will pick up and we'll get more points than simply averaging out our form suggests.

We could win 8 of our games and still not make automatic.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Clearly shows why the top 2 are pulling away.

Unless there is an improvement of biblical proportion 2nd place slipped away weeks ago.

The next 5 matches are all winnable. IMO we have to win 4 of the 5.
