Got my class 2 had it 20 years drove for about 10 years then changed jobs..keep getting my 5 year medical but not got my cpc now..which is another course and more money | | | |

Very much in demand, but as yet that’s not translated itself in to wage increases and salaries are still relatively low.
When we were in the EU these jobs could be filled by migrant workers, it was argued by some this kept wages low and was for some a key driver in voting for Brexit.
In reality, we now have a situation where there is a skills shortage; companies haven’t had the inclination to train people as they could just hire a new driver from a large pool and save themselves a bucket full of cash. It’s too expensive for people to acquire the skills themselves without financial assistance and it seems some companies would rather try to get the work permit rules changed than train up their own people. Be interesting to see what the government does about this going forward, will they dig in and hold the line or soften the rules [Post edited 22 Jul 2021 14:55]

Why can't we do both, government incentives, companies helping out but you'd have to agree to stay with that firm until you'd paid your training fees off.
It seems like people always find reasons we can't do things but can't find reason why we could do things. | |

First Cymru do/did a similar thing with drivers. They'll put you through the PCV, and if you pass you pay them back over a couple of years.
As I said in a previous thread, HGV/LGV training was a regular thing offered by a number of local providers but the problem was always around test resits. They'd pay for one test, maybe a second, then that was it. If the driver hadn't passed they were on their own. A lot of people went almost all the way but couldn't get over that last hurdle, or they'd lose interest and the provider would have wasted their time and money. [Post edited 22 Jul 2021 17:15]
