Now I thought I ws hard done by, 5 years and 3 months from when I was told I needed a new hip to the operation finally happening and then I saw this,

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-59152593

waiting 4 years just to see the consultant and then 3 years later deciding to pay for it rather than wait even longer.

This is what Drakeford and Gething did to our NHS and now Drakeford has promoted gething and put Morgan in to deal with a horrendous mess. That was Drakeford and Gethings reward for being totally useless, they got promoted. I feel sorry for Eluned Morgan, she has no hope of sorting it out as long as we have Drakers and Gething above her.

I'd rather have her as First minister and sack the other two!

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

My daughter got run over by a car yesterday while taking her kids to school and broke her ankle. From the time an ambulance was called, she was treated in the ambulance , taken to A&E in Morriston, x ray, plaster caste, another x ray to see it the caste was on correctly , and discharged all within 4 hours. Absolutely superb service. Wouldn't get better anywhere

My mate must be one lucky man and/or has a decent doctor who actually cares, he's just had his hip replaced all within 18 months .
I have arthritis in my elbows ,knees and hips , my right knee being the worst . My local doctor's not interested , no call back appointment for me , just a referral to the practice physiotherapist who does her best ,she's probably more overworked than the so called doctors in the surgery as lot of others I know with similar problems have had the same "non" treatment. No pain relief other than Ibrufen and paracetamol and reading that many patients have responded with that they're questioning if their life is worth living because of the pain they're in, that I can relate to.

Lucky her that's all I can say. My brother in law had a stroke , no ambulance available for hours so his wife in a panic drove him to Morriston , sort of makes a mockery of the FAST ad on the box would you agree . We once had an NHS to be proud of now its shambolic mockery of its past glorious past .

Sorry to hear that, athritis is cruel. Why do people think our NHS is fit for purpose i dont know. My recent dealings with NHS for 2 elderly relatives is beyond belief. It has to change.

Im not trying to wind you up but a colleague has just been in Sancta Maria and had both hips done on works private scheme and it was less than 3months start to physio. Ive had bot my knees xrayed scanned and seen consultant in 4 visits which took 1.5hrs in total.

I have other mates who are using marijuana for pain and parkinsons which they swear by and say helps enormously.

No point in anyone in Wales moaning about the NHS we had the worst waiting lists in the U.K. after 20 years of Welsh labour & they got voted back in.

The NHS is trying to do too many things for too many people. Add hapless Welsh Govt control to that and it's a recipe for disaster.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Im starting to hear more and more people saying how bad it is, on Monday mates baby fell and literally lives next door to hospital. 7hr wait with toddler in pain. But the worst part he said was the row of ambulances with engines running outside because they couldnt offload.

Awful the waiting list yes.
Don't forget the 6 million on the waiting list in England, rising by 200,000 a month at present.
English NHS... again.

Not sure why you'd want to point that out , It didn't used to the the "Welsh, English, Scottish nor N Irish " NHS , we were as one . We're ( the Welsh) are under the control of an inept unfit for purpose assembly who couldn't run a tea shop let alone organisation who's sole purpose should be for the physical and mental well being of its citizens and beyond but fails miserably

Yes it is cruel , the pain can be relentless at times and I'm still relatively young . I did price a hip operation at Santa Maria a which came in at 12k for one , my knees are worse so if I came into money which do I choose first. I have tried CBD oil which at first seemed to have a positive affect ( not the proper stuff which is illegal in the good old UK , if they legalised it it would put a lot of pharmaceutical companies noses out of place for sure ) I have acquired a small bag of ganja which I've not touched but looked at longingly on a number of occasions but not knowing the quantity needed I've left it on the shelf , for now.

Two of my elderly relatives in Swansea have had to cash in part of their measly pensions to pay for hip operations after being put on 3 year waiting lists by the Labour Party run Welsh NHS. £10,000 each if I recall correctly.

They were in too much pain to see out the minimum 3 year waiting list.

Thank you very much Labour Party stitching up two not exactly well off OAPs who had contributed to the national coffers all their lives to be treated like this.

Never mind, lets keep handing out £14bn each and every year to other countries so that their people can treated more promptly rather than those in this country who are footing the bill.

Your GP can care a lot...A LOT but it doesn't matter. He/she doesn't decide when you get the op.
I was being fobbed off, I was told it was decided by medical need, until I started making noise, threatening legal action, then I was given a date pretty quickly. Coincidence?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

That’s a terrible tale and it’s just not good enough. (article about traveling to Lithuana for treatment)

The NHS is under huge pressure and it’s failing in many areas and there needs to be a full and frank discussion as to what the future looks like.

We’ve got an increasing population with far more elderly people than ever before, 40% of the NHS budget is spent on the over 65’s and an 85 year old costs 7 times more than a person in their late 30’s. By 2039 the number of over 65s will be around 25% of the population. We have about 2.45 beds per 1,000 people which is around 23rd lowest in Europe and not surprisingly occupancy rates are amongst the highest in Europe. Pressure on beds has increased significantly during the pandemic. As a comparison, Germany has 3 times more beds and France over twice as many beds, Ireland is marginally lower than the UK.

The current pressures are unprecedented. There was a shortage of staff before the pandemic, but it’s just getting worse. In many places staff have had enough and are leaving the wards and hospitals in droves to work in community roles and for private organisations. Agencies are recruiting NHS staff - when the Wards are short they have to turn to the Agencies who charge a fortune and pay the staff a lot more than the NHS do !!! The more reliant the hospitals become on agency staff the less money there is for treatment etc, it’s a vicious circle.

Wards can find themselves operating on very low staffing levels, this increases stress on staff and I’d imagine reduces the quality of care. The lack of beds impacts on A&E who can’t admit patients, this in turn impacts on ambulances who are parked up outside A&E waiting to offload. 999 calls come in and there are no ambulances available etc etc. GP’s aren’t seeing as many patients which is another contributory factor. Rinse and repeat many times over and we end up where we are today.

A joined up approach where hospitals and care providers work together to support patients in the community or homes will free up bed space, but it’s going to take time and some banging of heads to deliver. It doesn’t help that the cost of care homes etc is extortionate.

We need a mature and honest conversation about the NHS and it’s future, what it can and what it can’t deliver going forward.

I’ve been saying for a number of years, the nhs can’t keep up and it doesn’t matter who much money is spent. The only way to save the nhs is to look after your own health, in terms of smoking, and othe lifestyle choices

Fair point and those waiting lists are not good enough. It’s not an excuse, but Wales does have a higher median age, higher percentage of over 65s and higher percentage over 85s who need more care etc.

Things have to change.
