Correct it was money Iran, under the Shah paid for the order of 150 tanks and armoured vehicles. In 1979 following the Islamic Revolution the British Government cancelled the order and kept the money. No UK government since has repaid the money. |  |

It’s complicated and she’s definitely been used as a pawn by the Iranians. They want their £400m back as the tanks weren’t delivered, successive governments have failed to relay the money for a variety of reasons and Boris’s guff a few years ago resulted in her being given extra prison time.
The dynamics have nw changed, certain countries in the West want address long standing issues with Iran and it’s nuclear projects, there’s also a requirement to source additional supples of oil in
light of what’s happening in the Ukraine. The £400m (while it is a lot of money) is, in my opinion relatively small beer compared to the oil revenues Iran could generate from the sale of oil following the removal of sanctions - the return of the money is likely to have been a significant matter of principal for the Iranians. If Iran’s oil comes back on stream I’d imagine it will reduce the West’s reliance on Russian oil and may make life more difficult for Putin.

Absolutely the right thing to do.
Nazanin is innocent of any crime and has been cruelly separated from her family for years - throughout her daughter's formative years.
Of course the Iranians were wrong to use her as a bargaining chip, but she's a British citizen and we have a moral duty to get our citizens back when they are unjustly gaoled.
Boris Johnson made the situation far worse with his incompetent blundering. And we owed them the money anyway.

Do you know why the UK refused to pay this money back? Do you understand why there have been sanctions against Iran?
Do you understand that circumstances change and decisions made sometimes need to be reversed?

You seem to think we've simply sent them the money in a straight swap for their release.
I highly doubt that's the case considering we have refused to do so since she was detained.
I highly doubt we've sent them £400m, and I highly doubt whatever deal we have negotiated centred around their release.
