| Which Is The Best Manager In The Championship ? 11:35 - May 4 with 970 views | STID2017 | 1) Marco Silva - his Fulham side were top all season, apart from in November, following a defeat to Bournemouth 2) Scott Parker - whatever we feel about him, he has taken Bournemouth up, two years after taking Fulham up Whilst both sides have been unplayable at times, Fulham for me definitely have the edge. Well done to both managers, both did superbly this season There are no other contenders IMHO, as these are the only two winners. The rest go into the lottery. The manager of those may be (at best) third best [Post edited 4 May 2022 12:25]

Agreed, wasn't sure if he meant just out of those two or out of the whole league. Cooper is obviously the best manager in the league this season. He earned more points than any other manager in the league since he took over. The fact he took over the bottom club makes that fact even more astonishing.

Silva and Parker (and even Cooper) had players that are far superior to most squads. Parker also bought big in January. You could argue that he should have been home and hosed long before now. In that case, perhaps he is not such a great manager. Lets see how they go next season. The guys at Huddersfield and Luton could be classed as better. look where they finished with the tools at their disposal. Just my opinion.

These were the odds for the title at the start of the season. They were based on the squads each team had. Both Swansea and Forest were 22/1. Forest’s squad hasn’t changed much from that point on. People are only now saying Forest have a good team because Cooper made them one. They haven’t been in the play offs for over a decade, finished 17th last season and were rock bottom when he took over.

Fair point. But by the same token look at the Luton and Huddersfield odds. The latter were seen as relegation fodder. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Interesting. I don’t really agree with that method as you could have Pep taking over Fulham and if they win the league then he has just won the league with the biggest budget - as he should do, others below him will without doubt have finished higher than their budgets - so to say as a result they are better managers shows an obvious flaw. But it does seem that there is a little bit of merit to it as Jones was named manager of the year who ranks highly in the “budget to finish list”. (There isn’t one, but I created one). Here are the estimated salary budgets in order from highest to lowest. Transfer spend has been added to this (loan fees haven’t been). This is the total player budget each team has had this season, or close enough to as a guide. 1. Fulham £59.56m 2. Bournemouth £47.92m …………………………………….. 3. WBA £30.37m 4. Middlesbrough £26.03m 5. Stoke City £24.19m 6. Forest £24.36m …………………………………….. 7. Reading £18.07m 8. Swansea City £17.90m 9. Sheff Utd £17.35m 10. Bristol City £14.43m 11. QPR £14.43m 12. Cardiff City £14.19m 13. Birmingham £12.69m 14. Millwall £12.20m 15. Preston £11.97m 16. Peterborough £10.64m 17. Huddersfield £10.37m 18. Blackburn £9.72m 19. Derby County £8.99m 20. Blackpool £6.80m 21. Hull City £6.62m ……………………………….. 22. Barnsley £5.65m 23. Luton Town £5.61m 24. Coventry £5.95m I will now match each team up to where they are currently in the league and attribute a + or - in terms of how each club is performing vs their budget rank. I will go best to worst (no particular order for ties, just as they come). 1. Luton (+13) 2. Coventry (+13) …………………………… 3. Huddersfield (+11) 4. Blackburn (+9) 5. Millwall (+6) 6. Sheff Utd (+4) ………………………….. 7. Blackpool (+4) 8. Forest (+3) 9. Hull (+3) 10. Preston (+1) 11. Fulham (same) 12. Bournemouth (same) 13. QPR (-1) 14. Barnsley (-2) 15. Derby (-3) 16. Middlesbrough (-3) 17. Peterborough (-7) 18. Birmingham (-7) 19. Cardiff City (-7) 20. Swansea (-7) 21. Bristol City (-7) ………………………… 22. WBA (-7) 23. Stoke (-8) 24. Reading (-14)

Absolutely, they have done fantastically well. Remember though. Cooper didn’t take over at the start of the season when these odds were produced. He took over 9 games in. They were rock bottom of the league and the odds for promotion at that time will probably have rivalled Huddersfield’s pre season ones. 4th favourites for the drop from memory. To go from that to the best performing team in the league since you take over is ludicrous.

Yes Forest were underperforming but they still needed turning around, I'd give it to Cooper but partly because he got us into the play offs twice too. Silva had a very good squad and was allowed to spend a chunk too.
