Interesting article from Ian Mitchelmore

Very interesting seeing the appalling ‘success’ rate, a statistic that RM must have been aware of, yet persisted with it ?

Would be even better if we could see how that differs to other teams that do it - Man C seem
to be quite good at it, Chelsea very poor

Yesterday Real Madrid used it all the time and executed it very well, they have top quality players of course.

The message seems to be if you have the worlds best players you can do it, when you have average Championship players, you can't. Not really surprising.

That the stats are so appalling yet he continued with it for so long...well I won't go there for fear of being called negative about something that is a nailed on fact.

Hopefully we've seen the end of this restart though, or at least the use of it reeuced right down to once or twice a game when the situation warrants it.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

This is low aspiration nonsense. Brendan and Potter played high risk defensive passing with modest players. I have seen 17 year old well coached kid in Croatian and Swiss under age teams have the Welsh boys chasing shadows.

Low aspiration leeds to low quality. If you aspire to be Peterborough then that is the type of team who you will play every too weeks.

The telegraphed kick out routine was not a good routine. Man city would mess it up as well. Nothing to do with the player quality. Having said that Fisher should have been smart enough to fix it himself.

Swansea need to mix things up and keeps team guessing.

You call it low aspiration nonsense then go on to not just agree but even say Man City would mess it up, even though they rarely do.

Hmmm.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Yes Man City and Real have far superior players but also 90%+ of the teams they play would be sitting back deep keeping things tight and not pressing which makes it a lot easier to do the short goal kick thing.

Martinez, Rodgers and Laudrup were nowhere near this suicidally puritanical about passing it around the back.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

......and Ashley Williams was pretty good at selecting when to play long or boot it into the stand.

On the subject of goal kicks, you cannot be offside. So I would like to see a player maybe obafemi or Piroe go really high up the pitch, either wide or on the edge of the opposition box. Give the defence something to think about, they’d have to drop a few yards at would have to think twice about pushing up and penning us in, would also create more space in midfield.

Funnily enough not many fans know this, I've often wondered why RM didn't stretch teams with a long player giving the midfield more room for playing out.

the keeper was never ahead of the defender under Brendan or Potter...l

We came a cropper at Arsenal under Brendan when a pass between Fab an Rangel was messed up Brendan tweaked things immediately but Russ persisted despite the facts

Taking a short goal kick when the opportunity presents itself is smart. Taking a short goal kick so often you become predictable is stupid.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
