Listened to this guy today, apparently less than 1 in 10,000 news items have a direct impact on your life. Rolf recommends being clear about your areas of expertise e.g. your profession, being a good parent or your hobby for example and then building your expertise.
He asserts that well researched books give a better broader level of knowledge than news items that are often commercially or politically motivated.
People who actively avoid the endless stream of negative news report being happier, more creative and have better relationships than those who constantly update themself with today's endless stream of news.

I'm doing much the same. I used to watch the 8 o'clock news on BBC Breakfast.
It was so negative, and repeating storylines day after day. How many times can they wear people down with how bad things are? Report facts not give opinions.
I now pick up headlines online and choose any that may be of interest. | | | |

I've stopped using radio and TV news. I use a variety of news outlets from around the world, I've noticed how political reporting has become one site in one country will have a lead story, often political, that appears nowhere in another outlet in the same country. | |

Jon Stewart did a very interesting bit on 24 hour news - basically he said that it was designed for a 9/11, but we’re stuck with it now and as most of the time there’s not enough news news, we’re forced to listen to pundits and their opinions.
At least we’re better off here than in the Stares, with our politicians (despite all their faults) willing go on channels and programmes that will challenge them.
Of course outlets still are agenda driven but will acknowledge other points of view on some occasions.
