He's getting a run of games and reaping the benefits, of the two central defenders on Sunday I felt he was the better.

I’ve said from the start he’s got all the attributes but is very very raw. We said the same about Guehi he had a rough start and everyone thought he was crap then he turned into a really top class player. Wood could very easily do the same.

He had only played 18 games as a teenager before the 32 he has played this season. He played only once on loan at Hibernians and got sent back, A bit like Finlay Burns at Swansea. A little too young.

| NATHAN WOOD ADDED TO ENGLAND UNDER-21 SQUAD on 09:43 - Mar 22 with 1196 views | RichardO | Good luck to him after the step up to Championship took him time to settle into the right side of the a young three man defence but with Manning dropping into the four man setup and the rotation included Naughton he started to bed in while making the expected mistakes we started to get results. The back formation then being disrupted with the loss on Manning for the Burnley game, being moved to the left side of the central defence it has taken him time to settle again. Chopping and changing of the back three/four has not helped him or us this season Nice to see a more commanding performance against Bristol with the team playing to his and our strengths. Hope he does well. | | | |

We have three central defenders none of whom are comfortable playing wide. Manning and Latibeaudiere, when playing wing backs don’t cover defence (compare with Roberts who would bust a gut to defend) Wood, Cabango and Darling all need to be played centrally with full backs either as a three with one cb or in the middle pair of a four. The constant changing of defensive positions has cost us games and the players' development has also suffered.

Agreed they may not be comfortable playing wide but then again they haven't looked comfortable in the centre, given how they have been asked to play. Manning when he concentrates on his defensive duties is an able left back he looks more dangerous going forward and as he is the only one with decent pace and cross but needs covering at times. Given the choice of Latibeaudie,Sorinola,Darling and Woods at right back in a four man defence I would pick Woods leaving Darling inside but given the evidence of Saturdays if Darling can play similarly I would be happy with him at right back. Naughton started struggling at RB and needed Connors help, as would Darling or Woods. Saturday the defenders attacked the ball meaning we were further up the park instead of building from the back so often and predictably. The difference in the approach of the team there for all to see, maybe the Bristols players stature was one we could match and overcome. [Post edited 22 Mar 2023 12:32]
