I’m becoming more and more convinced if we didn’t speak the same language we’d look at the US and just be confused by it all.
Two countries separated by a common language. on 11:06 - Mar 25 with 2416 views | controversial_jack | The US is a very weird place indeed. It's a long way behind Europe in it's attitudes and institutions. I have no intention of ever going there, but i'm sure some will disagree with me
Two countries separated by a common language. on 11:08 - Mar 25 with 2417 views | Joesus_Of_Narbereth | If only they put as much concern and effort into protecting young children from being shot as they seemingly do to stop them catching a glimpse of a willy.

it's hard to disagree. This is a country that has stopped abortion because of a right to lfe yet they also demand the right to carry guns which are the cause of thousands of illegal deaths every year. This is a country with a massive porn industry that won't allow stidents to see a historical work of art because it's a naked man so it's pornographic. It's a bonkers place.

It’s a crazy contradiction that prostitution is illegal unless your mate films it and puts it on the internet. Then it’s an industry. *nicked from Jim Jeffries’ stand up.

We don't even discuss abortion now, that was settled decades ago

There are some nuts things here but we’re mere amateurs compared to the far poles over there. We always seem to follow them about 5 years later when thankfully things have been diluted a bit. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Two countries separated by a common language. on 17:49 - Mar 25 with 2308 views | Boundy | Posters seem to have missed the point that the US is vast, so big that you could fit ten European countries inside Texas at once, with room to spare or the UK 2.5 times, that's just one state . Each state with its own legislation etc so no wonder there's such a mish mash of intelligence, standards of education and financial security. You haven't got to go far in this country before you meet similar levels of stupidity

I take your point about the size of the States but I don’t think you’d find those levels of craziness here. A headteacher sacked for a Y7 renaissance art class in her school showing the sculpture of David? You might get the odd nutter on twitter calling for it bur it wouldn’t happen.

There are other countries that are bigger and have a greater population than the US, But they don't the bonkerism that the US seems to have

I’d say that example is pretty different. I was on safeguarding training when this case was used as an example. It wasn’t a knee jerk ‘let’s use daft pronouns for everyone’ case. It was a child with proper gender dismorphia. The school and the parents worked really hard and really sensitively on the transition. Other parents in the class were all on board and there was a two year lead up to the change. The teacher wouldn’t use the boys name because of their religion which I don’t think is ok. I’ve worked in education for over 20 years and I’ve only ever come across one case of what I’d call proper gender dismorphia. This child is this story is a direct match to the one example I know of and it was totally correct to use a boys name for him. The teacher should have compiled.

Thing is, Gwyn, people have the right to religious freedom but it seems some religions are allowed to say no when others aren't. What happens when religion collides with our human rights? It's never pretty. Common sense is always a victim too.

It’s complex Cat, I agree. As a rule of thumb I’d say that religion should stay out of schools. We’ve got separation of church and state but politicians hide from this when it comes to church schools. I still stand by the two examples being poles apart, mind. [Post edited 26 Mar 2023 19:33]

Not being religious I would agree about it being kept out of schools. Religion still holds too much power here, considering how few people are actually religious these days. On the two examples I agree.

Nothing wrong with teaching kids about the different religious, so they can make an informed choice to take part in one or not

Thats not exactly what I meant, by keeping it out of schools I meant it shouldn't be used to control education. This very case isn't anything but a bunch of "christians" branding an historical and reknwned wirk of art as "pornographic" which is utterly ridiculous. I bet the parents who complained have no qualms about owning guns and having children regularly gunned down is probably an acceptable problem but a statue of a naked man...

Again, I’m with you Cat but keeping it out of schools is nearly impossible. Most church schools are built on church owned land and the terms of the lease tie them in to all kinds of archaic things that’s makes the church inescapable. Does my head in.
