Low maintenance can be achieved with slabs or chippings. I really think we should be moving away from unnecessary plastic in all areas, and this is one of the most unnecessary uses of all.

Does it really need to be explained how rolls of manufactured plastic are worse for the environment than grass? The difference between plastic grass and tarmac, concrete etc is that plastic grass is used as a direct substitute for real turf.

For a lot of people it's a godsend , low maintenance no pollution created by cutting it , it still continues support aphids , the rain water drains away with isn't the case with concrete slabs ( hence the rise in floods ) because the surface water has no where to drain off . its drought resistant ,no need to water it so conserves water & doesn't need chemical treatment to maintain it .

50 years ago there was hardly any plastic anywhere. Now we cannot get away from the stuff. If humans gear themselves to the needs of tight fisted 80 year old's we will be in a hell of a mess. It is better for the aged to move into managed flats rather than cover the land with plastic. Huge housing estates of brick housing, tarmac, paving stones and plastic is a modern day nightmare. Urban SUDS drainage does not look to speed up drainage but slow it down. Floods occur over short surge periods and this overwhelms the drainage system. SUDS* uses trees shrubs, grassed areas with roots. Swales ponds marshy areeas serve to store and slow down drainage not speed it up. This give time fro drainage systems to work. *SUDS (Sustainable Urban drainage systems) Kindly for your consideration. https://www.susdrain.org/deliv [Post edited 8 Jun 2023 13:26]

Yes please do ,I've explained the benefits , you just want it banned . and to go further until the likes of India , China Brazil etc cease to continue on in the manner they do then only then will my middle index finger will no longer extend to those who focus on the ordinary person who's very few pleasures in life are trying to be denied to them all in the name of the environment. Me having a 8 x4 section of plastic in my garden and have a had for the past 18 years isn't going to affect your life .

https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/dis There you go, i think you are maybe just a tad offended since you have installed a plastic carpet over your garden. You are correct that the BRIC countries need to go much much further in their efforts to preserve the environment though.

Fraid to say as to be offended many things do and me laying a bit of plastic isnt one of them. the fact that this and many other countries berate the ordinary person to do their bit , recycle, repurpose etc whilst ignoring the bigger issue and encouraging for example the use of ev vehicles and all the damage that does is to me an affront

Going off piste slightly, announced yesterday by Swansea Council they are building a solar farm covering 11hectares….about 28 football pitches. It will help achieve net zero in the near future. My point is am I right in believing it'll cause as much damage to the environment as possibly plastic mats? I’m thinking the panels will cut out the light needed for plants to flourish and thus potentially impact the insect life in the area.

As we all know for a every action there has to be a reaction and this will impact significantly on the local environment imo far better to install a couple of wind turbines , the loss of ground habit , feeding grounds for wildlife , creation of micro climates due to the lack of sun life loss of arable land ( if that's where the site will be built.) The east side of Kilvey Hill is currently being built on with vast arrays of solar panels , not pretty . Money may have been better spent on the tidal lagoon , generation 24 ,7, 365 days a year

Sunlight still gets through as the Earth rotates. I haven't seen any claims of damagbsolar farm. I reckon there is a good argument for just putting solar panels on every roof but the rich and powerful won't like that, having their nice little earner taken away.

If you look at a large site then the panels are angled in such a way and as close together to optimise the available space .I have them fitted to my roof and I have noticed quite a few new builds with them fitted but that is not always possible due to whether they have a south fling roof space. But where they can be fitted then they should be imo
