With a population of 3.1M, surely something different needs to happen, we are going backwards.

It doesn’t help with tens of thousands of really old fogies retiring from England to beautiful Wales each year.
Where I live, they have arrived in their droves these last 20 years.
Then expect the Welsh NHS to fund their old age problems.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

They’ve paid their taxes so are entitled to care, but the point you make is valid. Youngsters who cost less are moving away and older people who are considerably more expensive to care for are moving in.
The elderly people moving in to the rural hinterland are moving away from the very services they are going to need as they get older which poses a challenge for service delivery and significantly increases the cost base.

I am not knocking them, they canlive wherever they choose.
I am saying it is a huge drain on the Welsh NHS.

You are 100% right Builth.

There have been a couple of posts recently where Welsh NHS waiting times were criticised and where the level of economical inactivity was highlighted (Cat and felix).

There's nothing wrong with doing that but basing an opinion on one stat gives an unbalanced view.

Average age UK 41, average age Wales 43. Not too much difference,I presume the state of the nation's health will be important.

and another statistic which is often forgotten/ignored is the fact that Wales (WAG) has declared itself to become a"Nation of Sanctuary" and the EU settlement scheme which although the closing date for applicants has now expired is still through its appeal system can still apply and be successful , so with that follows immigration from other lands, people /large families with more than the UK average amount of children ( take a look for example at Blackmill or County Hall steps in the summer months ) ,we don't have the infrastructure anymore to support the needs of today's population and without radical change and clear policy enforcement from both local and national government then it will only get worse

Oldies also retire to Devon. There are loads down towards Exmouth and Torquay. Met a few retired Welsh down there. Good luck to them.

Thinly veiled …get them out .
It is anti English narrative again.
Many Welsh actually go and retire to Devon,Cornwall,Dorset,Norfolk ,Shropshire ,Herefordshire and many other English counties.
This garbage makes me sick.

It would be wors3 if the English NHS didn’t take cancer, neurological ,coronary and intensive and intensive child care patients.
If you have a kid and it gets very sick, then be grateful Alder Hey will treat them.
Also, if you fall off a cliff whilst climbing in glorious English hating Gwynedd, chances on the air ambulance will transfer you to a Liverpool facility.
This anti English crap shames us. Trying to deny it doesn’t wash with those outside this forum

Indeed, Welsh patients are treated in England but it’s not as though it’s free - they are commissioned services where NHW wales pay the English trusts for treating patients. it makes sense to pool specialist resources in to regional centres because it’s more cost effective and the specialists all work together. The alternative is that NHS Wales or in North Wales Betis Cadwalader have buy the specialist kit and employ the consultants. Given there are only a limited number of consultants with the knowledge to head up these units, it would create knock on shortages elsewhere.

Wonder if Drakeford will find another excuse for labour's running of the NHS in Wales. It is getting worse by the month.

It wouldn't be a problem if we didn't have a devolved health service, if it was truly a NATIONAL health service for the whole UK we'd be better off.

here's a question, why are young Welsh people leaving in their droves? Is it because they don't see a future in Wales? if so, who do we blame for that, why do they all want to go to England?

Maybe if the Senedd wasn't killing Wales more would want to stay.

There’s always been a brain drain and it’s not just here in Wales, go back 40 to 50 years and it’s been the same. Most of my mates who went to Uni, only around 10 per cent are still in Wales. I really want there to be better opportunities for our youngsters and I want the Senedd to sort it. The fury’s thing that needs to be done is sorting a relief road around Newport and making sure fast broadband is available to everyone.

Well we know the Senedd will NOT be building new roads. Without that investment in infrastructure not much else will happen. Business will no be encouraged into Wales if it keeps taking so long to move stock by road and the mooted taxes alongside the speed limit changes will only make things slower.

Way back there, 40 years ago, it was mostly Uni students who left and didn't come back, today a lot more young people see no future in Wales and look for opportunities elsewhere.

My son is only 14 and already has talked about leaving. The Senedd is turning Wales into a massive retirement home.
I suppose an upside may be that if rich retirees move here they may be able to afford private care, an upside for them anyway, it doesn't help those of us born and raised here.

At the end of the day a specialist will see you in no time if you pay, maybe the terms of employment should be once they are employed by the NHS they work only for the NHS, one of the main reasons the waiting lists are so long most of these Specialists are to busy doing private work to line there pockets. everyone moans about seeing a GP but an even bigger problem is seeing a specialist once a GP refers you when he suspects you have something that could very well endanger your life.

You do that and you can expect a mass exodus from the NHS of all the specialists. Those who don't stay in the UK will go abroad.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

There is already a mass shortage of specialists. Many of those that remain in the NHS have huge waiting lists that are made worst by the said specialist seeing private patients, if you have the money you jump the queue no matter the need of the patient you leapfrog.

Absolutely. I was in the wedding business for much of the 90's and early 2000's. Our target market was the top end Weddings. Over 80% of our Brides went away to further their careers and came back to Swansea to get married in our wonderful locations. How many people from South Wales have over the years or so moved to London for work.

The non building of the M4 relief road is absolutely criminal. The main artery into Wales! If Labour would have been in Westminster and offered the money. They would have bitten their hands off.

From what I've been reading lately, Drakeford and Starmer don't particularly get on. A few rows have been sent Cardiff bays way.

Starmer also refuses to say he'll do the right thing over the HS2 funding.

If thoe idiots in Westminster aren't careful they'll be providing plenty of better reasons why Wales should look at indy, as if they haven't provided a few already.

So the only answer really is to make seeing NHS patients just as lucrative for the specialists as private ones.

Average salary for an NHS consultant is about £100k. You'd probably have to at least double that.
