Banter or Hate? 12:03 - Jul 21 with 3944 viewsCovJet

Dear Swans,

I’m a Wolves fan – I’m coming in peace and hoping you can help me out…

I’m a senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University, writing academic papers as part of my PhD portfolio (Koln University). My research has a focus on the language used by football fans at games – for some people it’s ‘banter’ and for others, it has become a ‘hate crime’. It is a complex, emotive issue and one in which Wolverhampton Wanderers have recently incurred a £100,000 fine from the FA, due to chants aimed at Chelsea fans during the Wolves vs Chelsea game earlier this year.

I want to find out what you think of the language used – I want you to be honest.

The questionnaire is entirely voluntary and completely anonymous. I will only use the data I obtain for academic papers and once complete I will share the data with you on this forum. I have ethical approval granted from Koln University.

I will be comparing your answers with those from supporters of Arsenal, Watford, Plymouth, Ipswich Chelsea, Brighton, Bolton, Cardiff and Newcastle.

The questionnaire should only take you a couple of minutes and I would like to thank you in advance. Here is the link:

https://questionpro.com/t/AX3L

Kind regards,
Peter Evans

I think there needed to be more options. I think many of us who are neither racist or homophobic would admit to singing some stuff that others would say is both.

Some are racist or homophobic, some think it's just banter, some join in without even thinking about it because it's funny.

Did some Spurs fans get into trouble for calling themselves "yids"?

If something is really meant to be offensive it's a different story but for most of us it's banter, how many on here get upset about the Sheep chants? One that I can think off.

TBH, if you are chanting racist and homophobic comments it does sort of define you!
Slagging off other places is banter as it doesn’t take aim at individuals or specific groups.

I read David Baddiels book "Jews Don't Count" a couple of weeks ago. He equates Spurs being referred to as "yids" either by themselves or others as bad as clubs like Bradford or Leicester being referred to as "P***s".

Back in the day at the Vetch v Brighton (I'm guessing mid 90's) I can remember Cyril the swan walking in front of the away fans and the north bank singing "Cyril watch your a$$" .

At the time I found it funny but it's shocking to think of nowadays.

Times change mate, what was acceptable behaviour years ago is now not and rightly so. To be honest I'm embarrassed when I look back to what was "normal behaviour". It wasn't a class thing the behaviour was right across the board in all walks of life. Things have moved on for the better but not far enough.

Just how far do you think things need to move on before you think things have gone far enough ?

Every thing you say these day's seems to offend some poor soul.

Done, and it was interesting to have to challenge my own thinking on what's funny and what's either 'othering' or actual hate crime. Thanks for sharing

What you have to take into account at any time though is context. Without the full context a lot of things could be taken as offensive.

Some people are always ready to take offence. Without being at these places at these times and ony reading the basic information I don't really feel qualified to call it anything besides football fans being dicks.

It's been a long time since I chanted anything at the football that could be taken as either. I am very careful. Even so, I don't take it personally when Englsih fans bleat at us and call us sheep worriers because I'm certain that the vast majority don't actually think it's true.

no Bristol w*nker I cant read or write (racist)
no feed the scousers let them know its Christmas time ( poor shaming)
no packet of crisps cheesy smile *current cardiff manager is a pedooofile* (pedo shaming)
no Englands full of sh*t (racist)
no booing the ref over a howler (hurts feelings)
no cheering when we score (the other fans feelings)
no booing any player ( as it could be racist or homophobic or hurt feelings)
no swearing when frustrated (might hurt feelings)
no alcohol (you might offend a non drinker)
no burgers or hot dogs ( you might offend a vegan)
no talking to your mates(someone might not like your conversation)
it makes me suspicious some times like there are people looking to get offended over something to have a moan.
Banter should be preserved football is a working class we are not the tennis.
we are all adults and know where to draw the line.

its a shame isn't it that some people are just that nieve .I take my lad to watch the Swans regularly on the east stand ,the fans are always sound. I usually sit in the middle of the stand just over from the noisy part. I have never witnessed any bad behaviour.
Honestly what do you think would happen at our ground if some idiot started making monkey sounds or being a 🔔 end ?
I honestly think it wouldn't go down well.

the sala chants are low hanging fruit to be fair.
would a packet of crisps a cheesy smile *current cardiff manger* is a p*dofile be acceptable in this day and age?
tragedy chanting is a no no.
Where will the line be drawn if they start banning 'banter' chants?

I may be wrong but didn't the "packet of sweets and a cheeky smile" chant start after accusations were made against a former Cardiff manager? I don't understand why it continued after he'd left really. Seemed a bit stupid to me.

The problem is, they keep changing where the line is, take Sam Smith for instance.

9 times out of 10 it’s somebody being offended on behalf of others that is the main problem.
