The latest chain to go bust - 154 stores

Such a shame - my kids loved going there when they were little and coming home with a stash of goodies for not much pocket money....

It does seem that the high st is dying though, reccession ? business rates ? ...it seems to be anoher retailer every week...

I have no idea but retail is on its arse for sure....

NI increase isn't helping and the rise in the minimum wage, I'm not saying its not deserved but its all increased costs with diminishing margins. Subsidised business rates have also expired in many cases. You can squeeze so much but in the end it can get to much.

I used to deal with Claire's for a few years about ten years ago. I amazed they lasted this long. Online took all their margin.

Agree with both above.

Cheap in store tat is always going to be at significant risk of competition from cheap online tat. First eBay and then Temu have probably battered their turnover.

Labour's complete inability to grasp that businesses do actually need to keep some of their own money to function has administered the coup de grace.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I dare say the fact that the company has been owned by a number of different hedge funds including one which describes itself as a “global opportunistic credit and real estate investment firm” hadn’t helped, has the company been asset stripped?

The parent company in the US has been placed in Chapter 11 Bankruptcy twice in 7 years, the French arm was also put in to receivership last year.

The points about a taxation, costs and online competition are fair, but this isn’t simply a British issue. Is there more to come? Will it emerge from the ashes in a new guise?
