Pretty much everyone with British ancestry will be descended from one king or Duke or similar. Edward III had 9 children (that we know of) in a time where the population was decimated by the Black Death, it’s thought he could have tens of millions of descendants living today. Charles II could have had as many as 30 children, all these kings were top shaggers and fired out loads of bastards. The chance of any one of us not being descended from the royal family in some form is negligible.

Absolutely. I have traced my Bradley family who moved to Swansea in the 19th Century back to the the 1600's and then the fun fun begins with Lords and Barons and earls and many people of distinction. Go back further and then you find the Kings. I think my great grandfather was one of born 10 in Swansea so all of those born from them are going to have the same ancestors

I think that most folk have landed gentry as ancestors if you go back far enough. I think Danny Dyer is descended from William the Conqueror...?

My mother's side of the family goes back to the Angevins and Plantagenets

We owned a big chunk of Cornwall at one point but backed the wrong side in the Civil War and lost it all to Cromwell - the irony being King Charles now owns the Duchy - go figure !

Maybe I should write a begging letter ? A nice bolthole in Padstow would do me...

I take JoN's point, which is correct in general terms. But short of the argument that everybody is related to everybody in the full arc of time, it does seem to me to matter which connections can be demonstrated. Imagine what could be said by Trump critics if (father) Fred Trump's German ancestors could be shown to be related to Adolf Hitler! Pedants please note that Germans and Austrians share a common genetic heritage.

The connection is virtually irrelevant. You often share less than 1% DNA even with fairly close 2nd or 3rd cousins. Didn’t Hitler’s sister or another close relative live a perfectly peaceful and normal life in Liverpool?

Surely we are talking about the realm of rhetoric and representation rather than genetics per se. It is not a question of biological inheritance but what politicians and voters make of connections with famous forebearers that are or could be claimed. I fear that some are getting a little too serious about a news item that I saw as a bit of light relief.

Anyone use my heritage on here or do any ancestry? One of the mysteries for me is my Buckley family. Apparently my great great grandfather was from Ireland and just got left in Pembroke by his dad when he was 6. My aunt remembers him but her stories are a bit vague

I am by no stretch of the imagination a Royalist but this latest state visit seems to have been a resounding success.

Charlie has come across as relatable, witty, self deprecating and understanding of the current status between the UK and the US and that appears to have paid off in droves. Whoever came up with the idea of gifting Donny a shiny object with his name on it deserves a massive payrise.

It's gone a long way towards repairing the damage caused by Labour sending people to campaign on behalf of Kamala Harris.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Yep it’s opened a whole can of worms for me. I am an adoptee and in a matter of weeks have found out who my whole birth family are including at least 5 siblings.

Currently weighing up whether to contact them or not, what do you say after forty two years?

My wife has a half brother who made contact after 55 years, he was adopted out of her family. They get on brilliantly, he's a gentle soul with only one discernable fault, he's a WBA fan.

They took it carefully at first, had a chat on the phone and then meeting in a restaurant half way between where they live.

He says it has given him a greater sense of peace knowing more about his background.

I appreciate it is a really sensitive decision but hope a positive story helps, whatever you decide.

PS On a different vein a neighbour moved in six doors down from me about three years ago, by way of his surname we discovered we had the same Great Grandfather, he now refers to me as ' Cus'.

i would personally go for it - you may have a brilliant relationship with them for the rest of your days above ground. Hopefully they are all sane and welcoming. I know I have tried contacting some people with zero response on My heritage and wondered if they only get messages if they are still subscribed but I have discovered some relatives (2nd cousins overseas) and have a great relationship with them as, their family are originally from here and I'm still here.

My dad died when I was a kid and my grandfather's 9 siblings almost all emigrated so I lost all of my paternal family as my dad was an only child. My heritage as allowed me to finally find some of my "family" and brilliantly my grandfather's sister's son is coming over from New Zealand in a few weeks to meet - he calls me cuz as well :)

I probably will at some point. Just working out what to say and how to say it. Not really bothered about contacting my parents. I’m sure they had perfectly good reasons and all that but also f them. But I have a load of siblings out there would be nice to catch up.

It's bonkers when you dive into family history....

All those tales turn out to be rubbish...

For instance my great uncle was killed at Vimy Ridge with the Canadian army......except he wasn't

I delved into the old interweb and he emigrated on the Olympic a year after the Titanic and went through Ellis Island and arrived as a baker in Marine City Michigan

Truth is he had an affair and left his wife and kids - one of those big houses on Gower Rd in Sketty and ran off with some posh tart to America! No war hero....

Through Ancestry.com I am in touch with his descendants

My Nan (his sister) went to her grave being told he'd died in WW1 which I think is very sad but that's how they dealt with scandal back then...

She grieved her three brothers (two genuine casualties) as I remember her signing "roses are blooming in Piccardy" with wet eyes as a kid....

But how sad that Will was alive all that time and she thought him dead....

I would write them a letter/email introducing yourself and explaining the circumstances but let them know that you won't be offended if they choose not to respond. Gives them an out.

My Grandmother went to her grave insisting that her first husband died on HMS Hood. In reality he wasn't even in the Royal Navy. He was merchant Marine and was killed two months earlier.

Interestingly, the UBoat that sank his ship was commanded by Karl Doenitz's son in law. Which gives me a theoretical Bacon Number of five with Adolf Hitler.
