| Andy Burnham 19:49 - Jul 4 with 4114 views | Dr_Winston | Getting an existential sense of dread at the forthcoming annointment of someone apparently desperate to depict himself as the fourth Gallagher brother to the highest office in the land. Those of us with long memories will recall how monumentally useless he was as part of the late Labour Government. His ineptitude as Secretary of Health gave him the nickname of "Bodybags". His rejection by his own party in 2015 and then the electorate in 2017. To see him swept into power when things are already shit doesn't do much for my optimism levels. As bad as things have been under Labour, the capacity is there for it to get much, much worse. [Post edited 4 Jul 20:05]

It's been quite amusing watching all the Retweets of Labour MP's demanding a GE when Truss replaced Johnson and Sunak replaced her. All have been noticeable silent now of course.

As Jack said max, not even Labour MP's know what he's going to do so i'm surprised to find that you do. If the right taxes go up, good. And immigration worse than now ? Its's far better now than it's been for a number of years - not much more than a quarter of the Boris wave. Why not wait to see what he does, or says he's going to do, and criticise then if necessary.

as silent as all the Tory MP's were about having a GE when they were making a pigs ear of it and changing PM every five minutes

| Andy Burnham on 05:23 - Jul 5 with 2655 views | AnotherJohn | I'm amazed that Ed Miliband is still being discussed as a serious candidate for Chancellor. The purple-haired contingent in the PLP is more concerned that there may be more Milibands than women in the cabinet (with DM rumoured for a comeback) than with which posts they would hold. Burnham's rise to the top job looks set to lead to a significant Leftward shift, and to me that is not what people voted for. I suppose Liz Truss's brief time as PM involved a (damaging) move to the right, and in my opinion all big changes in the overall direction of policy that happen when a new PM comes in should result in a GE. | | | |

Someone mentioned about the right tax to be be increased , what right taxes would they be I wonder, this government has been and is being an unmitigating disaster ,driven by a purile idealogy of welfare handouts , net zero obsession putting us on a path to self destruction. We've all seen what this governmemnt is capable and incapable of doing and if anyone belives that things will improve under the reign of "our Andy " needs to see the same shrink that Miliband should be under.

This is an example of what he might do as AB himself mentioned the possibility in an interview. He suggested that they may increase business taxes on big out of town warehouse type companies (Amazon for example) and decrease those taxes on small businesses. On the face of it that is a very good idea in my opinion.

No increase in tax is "good". He should be looking at ways of cutting tax across the board. Taxes on living, taxes on doing business. All of them. The country is stagnating because unproductive parts of society (The State, Welfare etc) are growing exponentially at the expense of the parts that actually generate wealth. We're well past the optimum point on the Laffer Curve.

That is an excellent idea although the likes of Amazon will always find ways around it. Most people don't seem to want to have a go at these enterprises but would rather go after whichever government is in power without having a clue on how complex the whole governing process is.

J all Amazon will do is pass the increase in tax onto the consumer, they're not cheap now they are just a convenience being easy to order with same day delivery in some cases.

Exactly. Increasing taxes is inflationary. All businesses will do is pass that cost onto the consumer, thus forcing price rises (or redundancies) and then inflation. The cost of Government goes up, so taxes go up, so prices go up and on and on. Taxes need to be slashed. Government needs to be massively shaken up with efficiencies across the board. Welfare needs to be slashed. Nobody should be receiving more in total benefits than they can earn working a minimum wage job regardless of their circumstances.

Companies don’t set up , manage or implement how taxes are raised or collected , they like most will pay what they have to , now whether that appears to some to be unfair because they deem the amounts paid aren’t enough isn’t the company’s fault but government who set out the rules. The UK is continuing to lose tax because of over tax as Companies previously specifying the UK as their base have moved out to say the ROI and in doing so avoid the punitive tax rates that exist here and as a by product all the jobs that could have been here with the knock effect of no national insurance or income tax being paid etc.

absolutely and as Dr Winston says, taxes are inflationary which leads to that vicious circle. The welfare budget is almost unbelievable. One of my friend's is housing a tenant this week and she (on her own) is getting over 23,000. That is pretty much a full time job wage at £12 an hour. Multiply that by a couple of million and that is what the govt is faced with. How the welfare is cut is going to be difficult as private landlords are not going to drop the rent. I'm all for some kind of system where you "contribute" in some way if you are receiving benefits and you are fit.

I know, although there are welfare credits if they live in rented accomm but that isnt the point. I don't know how many don't have a private pension but the state pension costs the UK govt over £130 billion a year at the moment. That is 5% of gdp, pretty much twice the defence budget. I'm guessing that is why the govt change the age people qualify for state pension as it is just too costly. Pensioners deserve more to live on but we haven't got enough to give. I think the govt also have to pay about 50 billion a year on public sector pensions.

Fair comment, pensioners have paid into the system during their working lives though, be it 40 or 50 years or more. Which is easily forgotten. [Post edited 5 Jul 19:16]

| Andy Burnham on 19:53 - Jul 5 with 2106 views | Dr_Winston | Some pensioners have got to that age without paying into the system at all. Many lifelong benefit claimants swap from working age payments to State Pension (and Pension Credit) thus getting a bit of a payrise when they hit retirement age. I'd make receipt of a state pension dependent upon payment of actual employment NI contributions rather than credited ones. If you've sat on the dole all your life why should you get to retire on a pension? | |
