Prospects for next season 08:12 - Mar 19 with 8196 viewsTheChef

OK, so assuming we stay in the Championship...

Most likely we will lose most if not all of the players who are out of contract in the summer. From a midfield perspective we should be OK and you hope the likes of Bright, Smyth and Chair will figure more and kick on. The bigger concerns are up front and at the back where we will need to strengthen and do so very shrewdly. We need to find a Pukki goal-scoring equivalent if we can, but then I suppose so do all the other teams.

No doubt next season will be very tough, but if the fans can be patient and supportive (hmmm....) then a part of me is hopeful we can survive and do enough to start building a team that can challenge higher up the table in the next few years.

One thing re club staffing - the large number of coaching staff we currently have, and in general I think the number of staff at the club has doubled in the past few years, I don't know why. If we need to keep a steady financial footing then I think that will have to be addressed over the summer - how McClaren will cope with that I don't know, equally I don't know what his appetite is for building a team with youngsters and lesser known players from the lower leagues. We saw what he thought of that approach earlier this season, so without the money, resources and 'players he knows' I do wonder if he'll decide it's not for him and move on at the end of the season.

As others have said, it's defence, midfield and attack that we are short. If we had the nucleus of a good squad / team for these one or two youngsters to blend into, we might be alright, but we know we're short at centre back, with only Leistner and one of Hall or Lynch to stay, left full back, centre Midfield and up top. The spine of the team

We have to luck out, not with one or two signings, but around 4 or 5 and that is a massive ask.

We appear only to be going one way to me.

Can we go out yet?

I'm positive about next year.

If QPR were to sign a 21 year old attacking midfielder from League 2 in June on a free transfer, who had scored 1 goal in every 2 games, I would be pleased (Ilias Chair) and if we were to sign a 21 year old striker from League 1 in June on a free transfer, who had scored 1 goal in every 3 games and played for his country, I would be happy (Paul Smyth). Then add to that (hopefully) a confident Eze, BOS and Shodipo - we've got some great youngsters. The main thing that we need to do is make sure we have one or two experienced heads next to the youngsters although that doesn't need to be expensive.

I'd love to see us keep Freeman, but if we can get £8m+ and spend a couple of million of that on contracts to bring in some "older heads" to work with our youngsters - a CB to sit along side Furlong, a classy midfielder to play off of Cousins or Scowen and a 10 goal a season striker to take the pressure off Smyth, then great.

For Steve McClaren this year, it's a case of bring the youngsters through and don't get relegated while doing this. I think he's played it safe, spent a bit on loans while sending some of the above out on loan to mature this season. My frustration has been a lack of trust on BOS and Shodipo in the last few weeks, but hopefully that'll change.

That's the spirit!

I hope we can keep Rangel as he seems like the right sort, albeit he may not start that many games but will still be the good man to have in the dressing room. The challenge will be to attract a Hill/Nelsen/Palmer type to lead on the pitch - could be Cameron if he also stays?

I'm still not convinced about McClaren's appetite for this type of job. Suppose he's quite happy to do it while we're paying him a decent wedge, although if he got another offer from somewhere else I think his head could be turned quite easily.

I'm quietly confident that we'll ride out another year of FFP. Our young players are improving, the DOF's doing a good job of getting them loans if needs be and our scouting is very good.

Maybe it's because I follow baseball but I'm not that daunted by having to replace four or five players if needs be, as I've seen well-run clubs in America do that all the time. I think we're well-equipped up to do the same.

Youngsters.
Youngsters.
Youngsters.

If we play anyone who knows who Pat Sharp is then we have failed.

Just looking at the out of contract players in the Championship:

Strikers include - McGoldrick, Frazier Campbell, Gary Hooper, Lee Gregory

Defenders - Olsson, Elphick, Iorfa, Pinto, Klose

and even more dross in midfield.

Thats not looking good.

Wouldn't mind Todd Cantwell from Norwich on that list, great player, did have some very good games in the championship.
Did watch him play last season for my local club Fortuna Sittard in their season they got promoted to the Dutch Eerdivisie and he was an amazing box to box midfielder, flashes of a young Mark van Bommel come to mind.
No way Norwich will let this guy go without offering him an extension but if the gain promotion maybe we should try to get a loandeal for him.
Certainly if we lose players like Luongo, Cameron in the midfield.

Per Schuurs (also ex Fortuna Sittard) central defender who can't get a sniff right now at Ajax would be a good addition on loan.

Of our youngsters Chair looks a nailed on cert however Oteh looked good on the few games he's played but has hardly featured for Walsall in their relegation scrap.

Would like to see him recalled if possible to replace Nakki who wont be here next season and looks a shadow of the player we initially got(even tho at first he looked good but couldnt score)

I suspect that we will lose Freeman but, hopefully, get a good fees for him.
There's a number of senior players (Bidwell, Hall, Lynch, Wzsolek) out of contract and I'd be surprised if we kept more than 2 of them.
I agree that some of the youngsters that have played this year, BOS, in particular, will get a a lot more game time next season. Chair looks a very good prospect and may be Freeman's replacement. I'd be surprised if Oteh, who can't get game time in a struggling Wallsal side, is likely to provide many answers.
Losing Hemed, Cameron and Wells would leave a big hole, especially the latter 2.
However, there is going to be a need for some very clever recruitment. With next to no money for transfers, wages and the dreaded agent's fees, we could be very frustrated in our search.
Two things that give me hope is that the sides below us, Millwall, Reading, Wigan, Rotherham, if they stay up, are unlikely to get much better. And, there#s a number of sides who look likely to run into the same FFP barriers that we have already dealt with.

As things stand, I suspect we could get involved in a relegation battle, but may just about have enough to survive.

you also have to bare in mind a lot of players becoming free agents all over the place, and yes FFP biting in at quite a number of champ teams.

Swansea have cleverly gone about shearing back their squad and shows the folly of signing certain players like Fer who cost big money, upkeep is big money and nobody will take them off you

I would be very worried to sign a striker who claimed to have a 1 in 3 ratio that is in fact a 1 in 8. Also having another forward who can't get into a Div 1 bottom 3 side. Shopido was only considered good enough for 2 starts whilst on loan at Colchester then has been injured. BOS has been trusted by McClaren by not being sent out on loan and been given a chance in the first team.

This is baseball... where they're able to give a player a 12 YEAR CONTRACT worth £324m!!!
