An immense achievement and well done him.

However, and I’m sorry to make a political point about such a nice story, it worries me that we are starting to treat our NHS and Care Service like a charity. Walks and £8.99 badges are great, but it should be properly funded government department like Defence or DEFRA. It’s the first step to dismantlement.

I would hope the money will be spent on nhs workers rather the nhs itself.Maybe give them all a weeks extra holiday once this is all over with.Or hold parties for them to show our appreciation for their valuable efforts in treating the sick and needy.
But well done to Captain Tom anyway.

Well done to Captain Tom and the NHS workers.

Whatever your political views, the NHS will never have enough money, so it needs proper government funding and charitable fundraising.

Captain Tom is truly inspirational and I suspect he would have done something in this crisis regardless of the state of the NHS as he genuinely just wants to help and show his appreciation.

I don't know about everyone else but I would happily take a tax increase to try to avoid this situation in the first place. It's the same with all the charity which is going on now for the NHS and it's staff, but we could have eased the pressure on them by being ready in the first place with spare capacity in our NHS and with PPE on standby.

Agree.

I’m happy to pay a tax increase in exchange for well paid (and better conditioned) NHS staff too, with the caveat that we are behind the Bransons, Dysons, and Amazons in the queue.

I’m just suspicious that all the government and media instigated schemes like badges, clapping, and the coverage around the amazing Captain Tom is a manoeuvre to turn the NHS into a ‘failing department’ that only privatisation can save. They are fantastic schemes, but just feel a bit mealy mouthed considering the BMA went on strike two years ago and everyone was condemning staff as greedy.

It was exactly what happened to British Rail and British Telecom in the 80s and 90s.

Defund then privatise. A trick as old as time.

Again in must re iterate that this is a side issue to an incredible thing.

Big up to Captain Tom

But also big up to the British people who have proved, yet again, what a decent bunch we all are in getting behind this and all other schemes in supporting the NHS and other caring causes. We’re not all a bunch of self interested, uncaring, xenophobic leavers who don’t care about the bigger picture or each other.

Love to see some big business match Tom’s total pound for pound.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Agree

21.5M ATM

The only worry is many other charities are not getting donations as many may just be supporting this.

I belive that there a lot of small oranisations in the NHS charties group, I read smewher over 150 will benifit, so will be spread around a fair bit.

There have been a few big charity events that have been cancelled, London Marathon etc so a few bob that would have been made will still hopefully trickle into some.

I have a couple of organisations that I always try to help and those will still recieve my donations, I think many people will do the same hopefully.

Still what a cracking result for Captain Tom, it might just show many that small donations made if heaped in a pile can go a long long way.

Yes good, it goes to a number of groups.

The smaller highstreet charity shops have been killed.

I wish you'd have told me earlier that it was as just leavers who can donate.
