I do hope we're not going to wait until the last game of the season to ensure safety?

Based on last two games, against bottom 5 teams....I am a little concerned. Pretty unlikely we'll go down but I can see us in the bottom 6....

Poll: Warburton, What's next?

I think the club have tried to be careful with stating ambition. When Ramsey was manager Fernandes came out and said the expectation was to go up and things quickly fell apart so they have kind of just said since to be competitive which doesn't sound exciting.

For me the ambition should be to improve every year, get more points, win more games, finish higher in the table, more hits than misses with the transfers and if you keep doing that eventually that will end in high positions in the league.

Last season we finished 19th, 51 points won 14 games
This year with 5 to play we have 53 points and won 15 games so small improvement with a real opportunity if we can get a few more wins to say we've made big steps forward this year

And people forget that MW turned over almost the entire squad and had to deal with losing Freeman, who was crucial to us last season. A lot of that kind of thing gets forgotten by those with terminally short term memories.

Interesting, that, while of course Ruben and Fernandes have made numerous errors, one owner who you would say is almost a model owner is Steve Gibson.

It isn't half as easy as certain posters on here think it is.

Bare bones.

I prefer to call it pragmatism. I see it as analogous to having sold the daily driver Aston Martin DB5 superleggera because running costs, insurance costs, maintenance costs were all turning into a huge money pit so we got shot. We ended up getting a Skoda Fabia; practical, well designed, well built and does the job required at a cost we can afford. It'll never outperform the DB5, it will never replace the DB5 in our hearts and minds but it is better for our mental health and our finances. The Skoda is enjoyable to drive but has its shortcomings, and make us hanker for the DB5 at these moments but then practicality creeps back in and we remember why we don't have the Aston any more. In time the Aston will be viewed only through rose tinted glasses and we will be wailing "Why did I ever get rid of it, it was the best car I ever owned". It will be impossible at that point to remember just why we got rid of it, other than the odd fleeting moment of lucidity, but the family and friends will all remember why you are now driving a more mundane car than your aspirations desire.
This all paves the way to the finances getting back on track, making some judicious savings and perhaps one day an Aston Martin DB5 superleggera turns up at the right price and you can now afford to buy it and run it on high days and holidays.

I’d have sprung for just a little bit extra (Wells on loan) and gone for the diesel vRS model

Talking of LF - doesn't seem to be anywhere near the Sheff Utd team now?

I agree that this country is not what it was and the current virus restrictions is a godsend for control freaks to tell us what to do and what to think.

However I didn't ever say we were going down. What I have been lambasting is our end of season not playing this game anymore, losing many games on the trot and losing to our neighbours as though London derbies are premier league away bonus games. I just get sick of what appears to be an annual event and the following silence from within the club as if it is acceptable.

Sorry if I'm missing something here, but what exactly are you expecting the club to do?

Agree with everything written by yourself and Daveb above. Short term expectation needs to be tempered and we should enjoy the football and the subtle changes which will allow us to reach our end goal of sustainability. There will always be people wanting us to write a bigger cheque or get the next Messi its now about the board and TF sticking to this path.

I think Hoos in the recent AGM trotted off a load of stats on the players and minutes given to youth over the last 4/5 years and its an incredible change in direction, for the better.

Also during that AGM a question was asked to Warbs about what is a measure of success and his answer I thought was brilliant as I think he took a holistic view and spoke about points, wins, youth everything.

Sorry if this has all already been mentioned.

he's injured at the moment but do wonder if he regrets leaving, hardly played all season and think he would have been very good under Warburton

Forgetfulness does tend to occur when acknowledging the fact that MW turned over almost the entire squad makes it sound stupid ranting about 16th spots and local derbies etc that occurred under different managers and different players.

Right, after Cardiff's loss tonight, looking at the table:

There are five games to the end of the season. We are nine points off the play spot. Our striker is injured but we have a game in hand.

Hit it!

Nice thought but even if we won all 5 games, we would only have 68 points. Only one team has ever reached the playoffs with 68 points. Usually takes at least 72/73.

Whilst I have in no way succumb to the nuclear "relegation certainties" mentality, that performance was akin to going to bed on Sunday night in the belief that you had inserted yourself into the voluptuous, intoxicating beauty that is maya jama and then waking up on a cold, wet, Wednesday evening, with the cold drip of the upstairs neighbour's tap leaking on your head through the ceiling - realising you had in actual fact inserted yourself into the skeletal, boney rectum of Peter crouch...

Pass, pass, backwards to keeper and then pass, miss pass, foul by luke amos/Dominic Ball....

You are belittling the serious point I was trying to make. When did I say we have to win every game? What I want from the club is to set some standards.
There don't appear to be any. Nobody comes out and says losing London derbies continually is unacceptable or the way we finish every season in a half hearted manner is no way of showing progress. The approach we take in the cups every season to get it over and done with seems to be approved of as it keeps on happening season after season.
I don't hear anybody in the club saying this has to change and that we should raise the expectations. It comes across as a losing mentality like shrugging their shoulders as if they don't care enough. I don't see people in the club hurting enough as to how far we have fallen.
I would like our standards to improve and that has to come from within the club so that is what I want to see change.

What about the success we’ve made off the field? The real structural stuff like balanced finances, a productive youth team, the community work? This week we brought a training ground.

When did we ever win London derbies regularly? Or progress in cup competitions? The 90s?

What do those in the club need to do so prove they are hurting? Flaggelation? Hari Kari?

I think we need to get a grip. This negative bullshit was bad enough when we were genuinely shit and fielding scabs but it’s twice as bad when the club in making genuine and meaningful progress.
