I'd thought he was a shoo-in to join us.
Came on trial. About to be released by Spurs, so Ramsey, Ferdinand, etc knew about him. Right age. In a position where we are short if numbers. A player we could de develop and sell on.
I suggest, as per the Chris Ramsey interview earlier this week, they looked and decided he was no better than players we already had.

Sometimes the loanee doesn't settle; or another player in his position simply just plays better; or the injured player he was signed to replace temporarily comes back sooner than expected; or the manager who wanted the loan gets sacked and his replacement doesn't fancy him.
When Brentford signed Said Berahino on loan from WBA a few years back (Alan Kernaghan was caretaker manager), we knew he was one of the most talented teenagers in the country. We didn't know that he is also one of the biggest tossers in the country. So that by the time Uwe Rosler took over permanently, he cancelled the loan and sent him back to WBA after just two months. (We may have had to take a hit on that?)
The fact that he'd scored 4 goals in 8 games wasn't enough to save him in Rosler's eyes; more importantly it wasn't enough to save him from the old pro who pinned him to the wall of the dressing room after one game and seriously threatened to break his neck.  |  | | |

I think because Sheffield United had a sell on clause when they sold him to Bournemouth it has been knocked off so the actual fee is more like £22million |  |

Talk to any Stoke fan - Butland was absolutely terrible last season. Finally lost his place to a rookie at the end of the season, who played well enough for Stoke fans to want to see Butland binned permanently.
