I can't believe Butland is only 27. He's been around forever.

Butland hasn't been the same keeper since he picked up that bad injury playing for England in Germany four years ago. He was out for over a year and has never got back to the same level, probably a confidence thing. |  |

He’s always been a player who’s threatened to look really good without quite doing it. Maybe maturing now after a good season with Bristol R.

Players are still very happy to buy into the system. They're better remunerated as loan cattle, the parent club is pretty proactive about where they're sent and how they're managed, they don't get locked in to bad situations. Luxury temp agency basically. |

My point is splashing half that on one player from League One is not very “Brentford”, regardless of how it’s structured (which will never be you have no financial exposure if he fails; that won’t work for the Posh). You buying several players for a couple of million each, well scouted, and half succeeding and going for 2-4 times the price is your model. If you splash half the Watkins money on one player, who is unproven, I just think it’s a sign of departure from the previously successful model, probably in an attempt to get promotion this year. I don't really see the big departure or overreaching desperation tbh. The last five years they've spent about half total of what came in, over half of that was last year. With £40m for Watkins and Benhrama minimum to come eventually it's a natural expansion but not in terms of risk.

Trying to justify 10m for Ivan Toney is a stretch, I like him and think he will do well in an chance-heavy attacking team like Brentford. But 10m?? That's a lot for even a proven Championship striker, let alone a proven League 1 guy.

ATM I think Brentford are going to pis a weak league. Up as champions.
But Toney and Goode are the first time in this Benham era that I not only haven't been jealous of the signing, but also thought they've made a bit of a mistake.
