I'm afraid that was me. Baz has disowned me and has threatened to burn my Liberal wooly jumper and sandals next time he see me😂 He was just as you'd imagine him to be, straight into everything and 'buldering' about. I did speak to him for 5 or 10 mins and seemed to take on board what I was saying about an issue we have as a business so we'll wait and see if there is any feedback and judge from there. Overall good to see the PM in Orkney and backing a traditional industry no matter what party it is in power.
We're the biggest No voters to independence so a nice place to venture, we don't get the SNP up here, and we get the least backing from them too, for the same reason. Very few tories here so he never got a warm welcome. Flew in here and then down to Lossiemouth
Karl this is completely and utterly off topic but this is my favourite Scottish pipes and drums band, Its bloody superb.
This is where we have a bit of crossover/hypocrisy in Orkney Ted. We're Viking in heritage (proven with genectic studies) and we are definitely different to mainland Scotland in large number of ways but get the pipes going and football doing well (don't laugh) and all of a sudden we're Scottish. It's diluted a lot now as there's large number of English and mainland Scots live here now but if anyone comes to Orkney they are an 'incomer' (not a complimentary nickname) so when people say we hate the English it's a downright lie, we hate everyone non Orcadian equally! I'm the only Orcadian in my group who go to the Scotland matches and I don't wear a kilt, which they find strange, but there is no history of kilts in Orkney, its a very new 'fashion' but one of many that are common in Scotland that we haven't followed in Orkney. But I do love the pipes and drums, has to be both together
Karl, many decades ago I read 'All quiet On The Western Front' there was a chapter in the book where the German soldier was describing how for the first time in the trenches they heard this strange sound coming through the mist in the early morning from the British trenches, they way he described it was frightening, It was in fact the first time they'd been attacked by a Scottish Regiment, the pipers led the charge. The Pipers were apparently paid an extra penny per week when they were assaulting the German trenches, hardly any of them made it back to Scotland. I've been trying to research the book and the chapter with no success as yet. I served with Scottish Regiments in Libya, West Germany and Northern Ireland during the troubles, love the pipes and drums.
My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

I think I've heard similar to that before Ted, very interesting to hear this new chapter (for me) of your background, hopefully a fond memory! I don't mind pipes on their own as such but do you agree it has to be the pipes and drums to get the full effect? The drums starting and the pipes droning is a spine tingling moment, no other music can do that for me tbh, hard to describe that starting moment as music but it's the expectation I suppose.
Edit. You were right Ted, this is way off topic😂😂
I've never been into rugby but I love watching Murrayfield with it's pipes and the Flower of Scotland. Incomparable.
For clarity. And drums Brian... 😂
Edit Although lately at Hampden we've had a solo piper starting off Flower of Scotland and as the crowd gets louder it stops playing and leaves the crowd to carry on. Works well. Amy MacDonald the singer is the best though, she is basically a fan getting up and giving it laldy with a great singing voice, really stirs everyone up

It has to be pipe and drums, the bass drum beat is for keeping in step, left, left, left if you know what I mean. It's stirring stuff for a reason. I worked in Leith docks during the oil boom as a heavy mobile crane driver, I was the only Union bloke in our Company (closed shop) (I was a Union Convener AUEW) fecking hell that place has changed It was like the wild west when I was there. Anyway enough waffle from me. Be lucky.

Cheers Ted, you'll have soft spot for the Hibees tooðŸ˜
Baz will be seeking out this left, left, left drum!
Keep well, as you say waffle, but great insightðŸ‘
Right.. I know I've broken my midweek drinking ban but wtf is going on in this thread.? Bagpipes, crabs, Bazza, vikings ,Boris Johnson, and LFW's most prolific (probably) fisherman(sorry Pommy) .. Karl.

Glaring mistake PunteR. Due to chronic seasickness I am 100% not a fisherman! Worked in seafood basically all working life but not on a boat, if I was to describe myself as a fisherman I would be hounded out of Orkney by far more than the handful of protesters than Boris faced😂 Most diverse thread in under 20 posts though I do agree!!

You're in fisherman waders for a photo shoot. You're a fisherman or this is just fake news..lol

Could be misleading and many times today was asked by cameramen etc 'so you're a fisherman Karl...' Totally different and if I claim to be a fisherman I'd lose half our actual fishermen who land to us, very much an earnt title. Those of us on the pier have to stay dry too so wear similar gear but if we pretended to go through the rigours of a real fisherman then you'd never live it down. Hard to describe but there is a code as such. There's a fella in the photos who works for us on shore who is about 50, he worked at sea from the age of 12 till last year and he can call himself a fisherman but I can't although we're essentially doing the same job now. I know why and agree with the logic (if there is any). I've always wanted to be able to do that side of the job but not to actually have it as my profession, I'm a merchant, processor, agent but if I set foot on the premises of my supplier then I get debilitatingly sick. Imagine that next time you go the builders merchants for a few lengths of 3 x 2!
I will say that not now since my achilles injury as I've been office bound a lot but what I was wearing is generally my working gear for most of the day, it wasn't a dress up day for Boris.
