Musings on summer ins and outs 07:46 - May 2 with 7371 viewsdmm

We have an intriguing summer ahead in terms of reshaping the squad for the 2021/22 season.

First, retention. Can we afford to keep our best players and winter loans? Our present squad has pretty much produced promotion form since the turn of the year. Keeping things as much as they are will, for once, be as important as making changes.

Outs. I can see Lumley, Cameron, Owens, Smyth and Oteh going/being released at the end of their contracts, with Austin and Johansen not being retained. It looks like Kane will be moved on in some way. The usual slew of U23s being will be let go too.

Ins. We know Wallace will get another year and I expect Carroll could get one too. Field and de Wijs should get contracts too. Assuming all of the above we shouldn’t have too many vacant positions to fill, perhaps just a centre back, right wing back and striker.

One other issue would be loans out. I’d like to see Joe Walsh, Conor Masterson, Faysal Bettache and Charlie Kelman go out on short loans, say 3 months, to sharpen them up for the first team. We’ll obviously need a strong squad to do that.

I wouldn't mind Tom Lawrence if Derby go down.

Nooooooo.

The fella on loan at Luton Dewsberry Hall I think his name is, looks a decent player and one to fit into our midfield if we don't get Johansen

Expect Leicester will probably have him in the squad. They've got some filler to move on and he'll be 23 by next season.

We actually tried for him last summer, not sure what happened but we were definitely in with Luton and a few others for him.

To the OP, as for loans out, don't they have to be for a minimum of half a season at football league levels?

Nice. As with James Garner, always good to see we're spotting good ones at least.

Also suggests the season loan option isn't quite as far from our thinking as it might have looked on last summer's evidence.

Martell De-Angelo Taylor-Crossdale

Forget science, forget scouting, forget analysis - if we allow a player with a name this poetic and exotic to slip through our fingers...well, frankly, I'll find it hard to give a good goddamn anymore.

Pair him up with Wimbledon's Nesta Pierre Guinness-Walker. Slainte.

The club shop will need to source smaller letters, though.

About as realistic as Mowatt but I was shocked to see Joe Rothwell at Blackburn will also be out of contract soon as it stands. I might even prefer him of the two personally.

Some rumours around that Andre Dozzell at Ipswich might be moving this summer. Would cost a fee but definitely one I can see us being interested in.

Been massively impressed with him whenever we've played them recently. Like a much better Dom Ball.

He'd be well out of our league I would have thought, sadly.

Just looked him up and am disappointed to find his first name isn't Dewsbury.

I always chuckle when I hear his name as LBlock said it sounds like somewhere you might visit in the Cotswolds

Fair question. I had a quick check on the EFL website and couldn't see anything about a minimum loan period but I might have missed it.

Probably in a minority, but if Rotherham go down, I’d like us to try to pick up Ladapo for a small fee. Think he’s a good all rounder player and will look a lot better in a better team.

Very keen we sign Field and De Wijs permanently. Think Field could have a very high ceiling.

Giles is the one player in the Rotherham team - without being an actual Rotherham player — who always looks a cut above. Wouldn't mind a loan for him next year, although it would mean the end for Wallace, which would be a shame now we're finally getting such a tune out of him. (As speedy left backs go, we keep being linked to Penney from Wednesday anyway.)

Agree about Field. Clearly not as key to our turnaround as Johansen but potentially an even better player.

Big question next season is how, if at all ,do Carroll and Amos fit into Warburton's plans. That will determine a lot of our transfer dealings.

Could be a very pertinent point, since they both had longterm injuries the structure of the starting 11 has changed a lot. Will they actually be surplus to requirements or are they flexible enough to become key players in the formation which has been shown to sit the key players in the team, Dickie and Barbet?

Think they both will. LTC is a decent squad player and played some really nice stuff before his injury. The same for Amos too, was/is a real prospect and showed what a decent player he is. Now back and training, a rest and a good pre season will do him good.

I bet they are decent to have around as well .

It seems that LTC is to be offered a new contract- https://www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/qpr-tom-carroll-future-talks-070521

I'll confess watching Jorginho for them lot midweek made me much more enthusiastic about Carroll's prospects.

Yeah Dewsbury-Hall is a quality player but I think Clive is right, he may well be in Leicester's squad next season. By far Luton's best player this season. If he doesn't make the squad then he's rated at about £2m+.

Never knowingly right.
Poll: How long before new signings become quivering wrecks of the players they were?

Re LTC......I am not a fan, I don't think he does enough for us going forward and is not strong or fit enough, one paced.

I really thought he would be released this summer but listening to MW and reading QPR web it appears that he may get a new contract. MW is always positive about his players though so who knows.

WE need better if we are going to press for the play-offs next season.
