B Team 15:35 - Jul 28 with 1993 viewsMyke

Apologies if this has already been done, but I haven't seen a thread.
* How is this going to work?
* What days will they play on?
* Who is the manager? Warburton? Eustace A.N. Other?
* Who will they play against? Just other Championship B teams or any B team?
* How will we have enough players? If there are 16 in a first team match day squad. You will have the likes of Walsh/Barnes, Kane (until he is sold) Niko (until he is sold/loaned) possibly Masterson, Thomas, Gubbins, Kellman and will the rest be kids too good for the u23's but not the first team? Reserves games back in the day worked because you only used 12 players on match day and had another 12 in reserve action. Nowadays with 3 (or is it 5?) subs, injuries, suspensions, I'm not sure we have enough bodies. Can't imagine Adomah turing out for the B, but still might not get many A minutes.

Another one here who's interested in watching B Team matches during the season so would love info on fixtures and venues.

Also, when are the U-23 and U-18 fixtures announced?

Promised myself that I'd attend a few matches on Saturday mornings before heading over to Loftus Road this season.

The club explained in the original announcement the B team is a not only a solution to more competitive games than the 23s, but also, to critically add volume to the amount of games the 23s play per season. The context is that the 23s only play around 22 games a season, versus the first team who play 46. This is add odds with player development. More games are needed.

Therefore, in order to play more games outside of the u23 league, the B team provides such an option, through arrangement of separate fixtures, whilst also serving to add so called “more competitive” fixtures to aid player development in both quality of games, but also volume.

In summary, the B team is not a “separate” team from the u23s, it is an extension of it, whereby the most promising u23 players + fringe players of the 1st team make up the team.

Fair play - missed that at the time. So essentially an extension of the u23's and managed by them presumably?

There was another thread here somewhere but can’t find it.

In my research on B teams it spoke about the benefits to strengthen or weaken the team depending on the quality of opposition.

If you take a look at last seasons Brentford B team fixtures they generally played half the matches against Premiership U23 sides and the rest were non league sides.

Most of these games are played with a few trialists in Brentford’s B.

I think it was also said that sometimes Brentford B play international matches but those were cancelled due to COVID.

Seems to be currently led by Paul Hall, our 23s manager, but Warbs and co are often watching on for home games, and presumably rewatch away games at a later date.

I am not so sure the club knows how it is all going to work out tbh. Games will surely not be on Saturdays........ I would suggest it will be adhoc arranging of games depending on what we need.

B team football appears to be entirely ad hoc. As has been said, the Brentford B team plays a range of opponents from Prem U23s to non-league, plus some overseas. So assuming there's no coordinating body for B team games, QPR will have to arrange all its B team games.

Paul Hall will have his hands full if he's taking charge of the B team given he manages our U23s and is part-time assistant coach with the Jamaica national team too. There'll surely need to be someone appointed to manage some of the B team work.

Thanks everyone. I assumed it was going to be a proper structured league for players not getting regular first team game time, so that why I was wondering how we would have the time and players to operate it. We saw last season - even during our much improved second half of the season - that we played better when we had extra time on the training ground and our performance dipped when the games came thick and fast.
As an ad hoc extension to the u23 current structure, it will be easier to fit in around existing games and give the fringe players an opportunity to play 'mens football' at least some of the time.

I suspect it will eventually become a proper league over time.
B team is the way to go for many reasons.

zzzzzzzzzz

Seems as though we use the U23s as a B team anyway, so all this would do would formalise it and shut up the people who complain "Todd Kane is well over 23!".

You definitely see the B team distinction a lot better taking their pre-Covid cross-border fixtures into account. Looks a stimulating programme.

When MW spoke recently about ‘feeder’ or close links with other clubs surely that would also complement the running of a B team.

I imagine there are plenty of other clubs like Brighton and Brentford whose owners have a stake in other European teams.
