I did not think Coventry City owned their ground - they definitely do not now. Am I not correct that it was not the decision of Coventry City FC to lease out the ground to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games for sevens rugby which eventually ruined the surface but it was the company that owned the ground, presumably at the time, Wasps rugby club?
So, this is a clear example of the punishment you can get when you have no control or ownership over your own ground, something Coventry City had in this situation.
And what happens if Ashley chooses to do something similar again and the ground is damaged again at no fault of Coventry City? Seems to me the EFL are, yet again, acting like idiots and punishing the football club, while knowing they cannot punish the real owners and the real people who caused the problem. |  | | |

The Football League can only deal with the clubs. It is up to Coventry to deal with the people they contract with, if necessary through the courts, for recompense for costs.. [Post edited 23 Dec 2022 10:17]

I agreee it's a tough one as Wasps owned the ground.
Howver they can thank they're lucky stars there not QPR - £50mill find and 800 point deduction not suspended I imagine.  |  | | |

Well they threatened take 15 points off us during the Taraabt Season and only announced no deduction right before the start of last game at home to Leeds..

Its a suspended points deduction, which means the points deduction will only happen if the ground gets into a bad way again. Actually seems like a reasonable outcome.Coventry have standing in court to press the ground owners to maintain the ground appropriately

The ground owners entered administration/ liquidation, so I can't see how Coventry City would be able to take anyone to court. | | | |

It is, and has to be, the clubs responsibility to ensure they have a pitch/ground that meets the standards for the competition they are entering and that it's available at the scheduled time. Exceptions due to weather etc. Coventry should have ensured that their contract with the ground owner ensured they had the pitch available for the fixtures. If it didn't or they didn't enforce it then that's their lookout.
So, I think they are lucky to have it suspended, I suspect if it hadn't been for the fact the damage was done by the Commonwealth's then it would have been seen more seriously. | | | |
