Was thinking that if more teams adopted Gazball as we’ve seen in the last couple of matches, could it leave the ball left on the halfway line with both teams sitting deep in their own halves waiting for the other team to make a move?

Poll: Where will Clive put QPR in his new season preview

Maybe, but it turns out that I'm not completly certifiable after all, according to this:

https://themastermindsite.com/2019/09/21/counter-attacking-and-the-death-of-tiki

That's a great article. excerpt from that is especially poignant and applies to Burnley 2nd half, and Stoke pretty much the whole game, and to us in far too many games under previous managers and why we conceded so many counter attacking goals against teams setup to play like this against us.

"But it’s been well documented in recent years that you can keep all the possession like Spain, but if you do nothing with it and just keep it in your own half and the middle third, teams will intentionally set up to play on the break and overcome the odds to be victorious."

Thanks, Clive - brilliant timing, if I may say!
To start the conversation, I quote from Dan's superb (as usual) piece:
"It’s been interesting to see Ainsworth’s flexibility in adapting to the players’ needs against his principles"
I'm sure several respondants will focus on the "against his principles" part. I (and several others) would prefer to focus on the "flexibility in adapting to the players' needs" part, as I would contend that he will continue to do that going forwards, judging by his own comments to date.

Great insight, nice one. We're lucky to get this sort of stuff

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Spoke to GA at the kit sponsors' event last night. He's not stupid and 20% possession isn't the way he wants to play. He also knows what our limitations are and used the system the best way to get the points we needed. Every team who have gone toe to toe against Burnley this season have been burned so why try and outplay a team you can't compete against - some of the players recognised that too.

He couldn't play 20% possession at home - the crowd would destroy the team very quickly. However, away from home, with the home fans desperate to get a goal against an immovable object, it has its benefits. It písses teams off and they get frustrated. Wouldn't it be nice to be a QPR team no-one wants to play against?

I'm not expecting it'll be the way we play in the future and to assume it will be, based on the position we were on is a big step.

That's encouraging

And the winter's going to be even longer.

It certainly does put the cat amongst the pigeons, Clive, because it gives the lie to the idea that Ainsworth is either tactically rigid, or inept, or both: "it’s been interesting to see Ainsworth’s flexibility in adapting to the players’ needs against his principles, going from a rigid man-to-man approach to a zonal one, when other managers could easily stick to their guns."

So much for what some have described as 'stone age' football. I've said it before, but I think GA is far smarter than people give him credit for - maybe the aging rocker look has triggered unconscious prejudice.

I'm not sure people on here have said he is inept. Having read the analysis I am delighted with how we are setup without the ball. We were so easy to play through, even under Warburton, and it's great that we are now harder to beat. Dont let the opposition score, you cant lose!

The real test will be what we do with the football when we have it, and how we play when at LR, or when going behind and chasing the game.

The squad is certainly going to need a big overhaul, more athleticism and pace required, something we've been crying out for for a couple of seasons anyway.
