Goals - Hitting Targets 09:54 - Apr 11 with 2691 viewsAntti_Heinola

I was thinking the other day, purely in terms of goals, who has hit their 'mark' this season?

Paal, with 4 from left back, is a slight over-achiever.
Cook, with a couple, given his general record in scoring, is not bad.
Fieldy is over-achieving compared with his historic stats, but under-achieving when you think a number 8 should be getting 5 or 6.

Obviously, all our forwards are under-achieving, as are all our midfielders, and really our defenders too except the above. Jimmy Dunne, big improvements aside, should be looking for 3 or 4 a season.

Bare bones.

Field has missed three or four sitters, so he would probably agree that he’s underachieved.

Smyth, Willock and Chair should all be aiming for between 5-10 goals and then you just need one forward to hit 10-15 and you are comfortably mid table

Smyth the other night I can't get my head around how he always goes near post with a shot apart from that second half one which he drills down the middle, so frustrating

We've struggled to a paltry 40 this whole nauseous season - only Rotherham (32) and Sheff Wed (35) have managed to miss more often than that.

Thank the Subbuteo gods Marti has stiffened our defence as well as he has! Otherwise, we'd be in all manner of derring doudou!

Does any whizz have our goalscoring stats since he arrived compared to the previous shitshow this season? (I don't get the feeling they've exactly skyrocketed.)

Colback has I'd say with 3 in 25. His best season for goals was his first full season when he was on loan at Ipswich when he got 5 in 42.

All strikers/forwards should be aiming for ten goals as an absolute minimum.

Our goals for and against AA (after Ainsworth):

For 30 Against 28. Conceding exactly a goal a game.

I always find it weird how often all our players favour the near post shot rather than across the keeper. Doesn't make sense to me because if you scuff a shot across the keeper, you've got the chance of someone running in and finishing it off. If you shoot near post and you scuff it, it's just an easy take for the keeper. Also keepers tend to cover near post more easily leaving a bigger target to aim for when players shoot across the keeper.

Great post Nix and the basic skill taught from starting the game until ending it at the pub league level.
Rip it across to the far post and its either a save/ tap in rebound or bulging net .
Smyth is just too wired to keep his head and hit the opposite corner and has blasted multiple chances into the near sidenetting .
Armstrong has raw speed and talent but has zero game situation management so he either needs to develop killer instinct or he will not be a consistant goalscorer .
I met a MLB Catcher at a bar one night and I asked him how top athletes keep calm when the stadium is on fire around them and he said they train their brain to slow everything down and just ignore the noise .
Most top strikers know you cannot be tackled from behind on a breakaway or its a penalty and red card so they just focus on putting the ball where the keeper is not able to save it high or low .

21/22 season we scored 60 goals (8th most in league, finished 11th) with our 5 forwards contributing 40 odd of these 60 goals : Gray 10, Chair 9, Dykes 8, Willock 7 and Austin 5.

22/23 season we scored 43, unsurprising given we had lost Gray's contribution and were left with Dykes 8, Willock 6 and Chair 5 as our leading scorers.

Dykes has deteriorated from 1 in 3.5 games to 1 in 4 to 1 in 5 to now likely 1 in 7 which is beyond unacceptable but maybe not surprising given 1st half season under Ainsworth and 2nd half season's rotation and the absence of our best creative player in Willock. Chair's goals + assists have dropped off a cliff but were previously likely inflated by Willock's superb first half of last season.

Obviously our attacking play and player numbers who get forward in open play needs a re-think and re-set but in answer to your question,

No-one has come anywhere near the mark this year, particularly Dykes and to a lesser extent Armstrong.

Such fine margins, as ever. A few less keeper bloopers and a handful more goals from our forwards and we'd have another 6 points or more and be well clear by now.

such a lack of goals from our forwards has been a real worry , i think frey has one scored of the last ten we have scored? but somehow we have done enough to get away from the bottom 3 and please, we stay out of it.

WHO WOULD YOU TRUST IF WE GET A PENALTY??

Just to add to the stats, we have are third from bottom when it comes to shot conversion after Sheff Wed and Stoke with 640 shots resulting in 40 goals:

We are 16th for total shots at goal, so our league position doesn't lie there - thank goodness our defence has been pretty solid

Do wonder if a goal scoring centre forward would take a look at Chair and Willock and think, good players but not for me thanks.

I’m pleased Field has started to score. That was an obvious gain to be had by Cifuentes. With his ability in the air as well you should be getting 6-8 out of him and that has to be the aim next season.

Everybody else is under performing bar Paal.

Have Armstrong, Dykes and Frey scored 10 between them this season? I can only think of 8. Unbelievable really.

I think our defenders have out scored them. You start to think if we go 4-3-3 next season that our front free should be defenders as well.

Never knowingly right.

That's fascinating Pat about the MLB. I'm sure it's possible to train your brain to react differently. Either by some kind of mindfulness practice or by repetitively putting yourself in a game-like situation. For example having defenders run at you while you are practising shooting, maybe while yelling to make it more stressful. If you got used to calming yourself in a stressful match-like scenario, surely it would become easier in an actual game?

Yeah they have 10, Dykes 5, Armstrong 4 and Frey 1, 8 if you only include league goals

When the time comes to re-assess our strike force, I hope that the club will not look simply for a big lad who puts himself about and gets headers in. Take a look at who has scored lots of goals in the Premier League over the years and you will find that plenty of shorter characters have made their mark. Think Jermaine Defoe, Michael Owen, Sergio Aguero, Robbie Keane etc.
Somewhere in the lower leagues, or languishing on the fringes of Premier League squads, are players who have the instinct that has been missing from our team this season.

I was curious about what the odds were for our players to score first tomorrow. The site I use had the EIGHT shortest odds on Hull players. That's how low the opinion is of our strike force.

Agree. There’s a perception on here that if we sling more crosses in Dykes et al will get on the end of them. Complete baloney.

Time to ditch the target man nonsense and get a striker in that will complement the 3 technical midfielders behind him and is adept at finding the net working in tight spaces.

Another lump up front is not what is needed.
