I know I'm stating the bleeding obvious ........ 19:49 - Aug 6 with 2593 viewsNoDiddley

But I've just realised we were the only club NOT to score in the championship this weekend
Erm is that going to be the problem?

Poll: Moses Odubajo - Stick or Twist?

It's been a problem for the last two seasons. The problem of our non-scoring strikers was papered over to a degree towards the end of last season with Manning, Bidwell, Freeman, Luongo, Scowen, Wszołek and Smyth all getting on the scoresheet.

To be honest Smith and Sylla are not that bad at this level but we play 4-3-3 and we very rarely go 4-4-2. The bottom line is that if you push Smith and Sylla so that they are in the 18 yard box most of the time and put decent service into them they will score goals. Sadly we seldom have the width and I hope McClaren sees that quickly. Without a brilliant save Sylla could have got us a point because he's a poacher and we rarely play to his strengths. Same with Smith. Stick him around the penalty spot facing the goal and he'll get his head on it.

It's not rocket science.

Never knowingly right.

The goal scoring problem has been greatly exaggerated on here. Last season we scored 58 goals, which was equal 13th best in the division. Yet we conceded 70 goals which was better than only four teams. Wasn't our problem more a shaky defence than a poor attack?

13th/14th highest scorers even with Washout starting 24 games compared with Smith 17 and Sylla 13. Give Smith and Sylla a chance is what the stats say.

We don't need to score as long as we keep them out at the other end. 45 nil-nils should see us safe for another season.

I'm just going to go ahead and predict "25 goal Washington not enough to see the R'rs into the playoffs - just"

If it is crossed into the box Smith will get his head to it. Where it goes from there is anyones guess.

being the only championship team not to score is a nothing story - a bit like that nonsense we ad a few years ago that we hadn't scored from open play for x amount of games.

Exactly, a nothing story as you say. A slightly freakish set of results. Normally you'd expect at least three away teams fail to score on a full set of fixtures. Last season's opening day fixtures, seven teams failed to score (one home six away).

2011 aside, when do we ever have a positive goal difference.

The only things you can guarantee from a season:

We will be sh1t away from home
We will exit both cups early
We will have a negative goal difference.

And every year I renew my season ticket! (auto renew this season in all fairness)

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

It's all perfectly normal and nothing to be ashamed of.

The 'best' nonsense story was that we were so ashamed of our position in the PL that we weren't publishing the league table in the programme.

Real reason? - The game was a Mon eve game, so pointless publishing a league table without the previous Saturday's results!

if you have pacey wingers it's no use playing smith, they'll get to the byline
way before he trundles into the box.

Disagree.

You’re assuming we’re counter attacking and breaking from the half way line. I’m thinking of where we have possession in the oppo’s hakf. Rather than trying to force it through the middle or slip in Smith/Sylla, work it wide and sling it in for them to attack. So many of their goals are from crosses (with their head or feet).

Having watched Forest vs WBA, Leeds vs Stoke, Fat Boys derby team , Villa, Swansea vs Sheff utd and hearing Boro thrash Sheff utd I think we are in for a very long season a head this league is fast becoming a premier league 2 not a chance in hell will we finish anything above 16th id say we are in a mini league fighting to stay a head of Rotherham, Wigan, Blackburn, Hull, Bolton ,

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Hmmmm not so sure - every year 3 teams come down from the PL, every year you have 3 top 6 sides from the previous season who didn't go up, every year at least 2 or 3 clubs spend big to get to PL and every year you have 3 promoted teams with 'momentum'

Not sure how you can say league is so much better on the evidence of the 1st week's highlights.

Much has been made of the fact that we are the only team not to score - you could twist it round and say that every defence (except Preston) has conceded already!
