After a gap of 50 plus years, I watched this film noir classic again. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it, but Humphrey Bogart was a bollocks actor, all he had was a wonky accent. And the dialogue was f*cking shite.
I don't think ol' Bogie really needed to be a great actor. I must have every one of his films on DVD. He was laconic, great facial expressions, the right voice. The Caine Mutiny was probably my favourite and of course, Casablanca.

It's one of my favourite films of all time, but somehow I still agree, Boston!
It starts very well - noir, moody, lots of spaces, but by the end it's ridiculously cheesy, the dialogue is far too wordy, it has that thing that I hate in films where they feel like stage plays - walls too closed in, no movement, no facial expressions, just words, words, words.
Gutman's character is brilliant, though. Keeps the film together, in my view. Nearly every second sentence seems to include the phrase 'I do love a man who...' but he cracks me up anyway.
Cairo is a cracking bad guy, weak and devoid of morals.
Bogart's character is maybe a bit more linear and basic under Hammet and Huston's writing than it would be under Chandler, and the female roles are nowhere near as complex as in the better noirs.
But, still, treated as light entertainment and maybe even slapstick, it always delivers for me.
But it is, clearly, nowhere near 'Casablanca' or the masterly 'The Big Sleep'. So, on that level, I get you.

Oooohh, yes Sir, I'd can Bogie, I'm agreed with ol' Boston. Bogie, Bogie Not all night looooong!
For me , Casablanca is the greatest film of all time. I watch it at least once a year and find something new to appreciate nearly every time. H Bogart is excellent in that film , as are all the cast, who have well rounded characters no matter how small their part is .
