http://news.sky.com/story/1621599/should-english-national-sports-change-anthem

I've been saying for years we need to elbow God save the queen as our national anthem.

While other countries sing about national pride, we have to listen to some dull as dishwater song about some make believe being in the sky saving some rich woman.

I recommend This is England by the Clash

For England I'd like 'I vow to thee my country' or 'Land of hope and glory'

Something traditional and English.

Now if it was England it would have to be 'Jerusalem'.

But the UK? Who knows?

Nothing wrong with GSTQ , problem we have is bar the odd, Rugby or Football match it is hardly sung with any gusto (and even then the England players just stand there looking gormless) , anyone under 25 hardly knows the words, and if you did change it to say LOHAG or Jerusalem would the kids today be taught it to sing
with any national anthem we have it should be sung at schools first thing in the morning , then maybe kids will know the words and then perhaps it could be sung with a bit more patriotism whatever it may be

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

They'd have to do an x factor style show for anyone under the age of 25

A bit "Last night at the Proms" though..

I think Fat Les's Vindaloo is perfect. Adds a bit of spice...

GSTQ is a load of bollocks and should have been ditched years ago. Awful dirge, crappy sentiments.

Bare bones.

An ideal candidate to co write the new national anthem would be the politically canny Benedict cumberbatch with politically savvy Paloma Faith . Something inoffensive to all cultures, living things and elements on the periodic tables and that highlights the evils and barbarity of the British empire , our role in the slave trade and an Englishmans god given right to suck cock behind closed doors, or in a Mcdonalds plastic ball play pen in front of minors.

Give me that over a spitfire flying overhead in the sky while drinking drinking warm beer on a summer evening any day.

I suggest anything by Billy Brag.

my choice. ' there aint no pleasing you' by chas or dave, or the theme tune to dads army.

'Hooked On A Feeling' - the oogah-chagahs at the beginning would scare the oppo to death.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

Nothing wrong with it?

According to a YouGov survey - make of it what you will https://yougov.co.uk/news/2015/02/12/third-british-adults-dont-believe-higher-po less than a third of adults say they believe in God.

And quite a few 22% say they favour a republic (Wiki).

It's leaving a lot of us out.

As for singing an anthem every day in school, pshaw...
It's just not like that any more. Nor do I for one think it should be.

it doesn't really matter, because as soon as daesh get into power, they will change the anthem anyways. and you will have to know all 72 verses by heart, and sing it with genuine gusto.
that or you will be in the queue for friday morning beheadings in trafalgar square.
so it's a mute point discussing short-termism.

It's not what you've got; it's where you stick it.

1. You must be watching the wrong rugby, all those public school boys belt it out
2. It's hard to sing a funeral dirge about a make believe being with gusto

If you want an existing song that all age groups know the words to, then what about “The wheels on the bus”? Genuinely inclusive, uplifting and written by our greatest composer, Elgar. It’s even got actions. Failing that, “Jerusalem”. Whatever it is, it should be about our country and us as a nation rather than an individual.

Even the most wild-eyed, pumped-up Royalist sounds like they're off their face on 400mg of Mogadon when singing GSTQ. Terrible song.

Fulham FC: It's the taking part that counts

"Land of Hope and Glory" or "Jerusalem", but since I'm an atheist, and in order not to offend other religions, I would like all references to "God" changed to "Bod"

Why shouldn't our national anthem whatever it may be sung in schools ?
watch the kids in places like Italy, France , Spain they all embrace there anthem, and shock horror they know the words
my nephew who is 13 goes to school in Australia they sing the anthem everyday
they are taught to be proud to be an Aussie, compare that to most 13 year olds here they couldn't even tell you who Winston Churchill is
there is nothing wrong in embracing our culture , our traditions , our history and our anthem

Have a look at the words yourself sometime. It's all about the queen and god nothing about the nation, it's culture, traditions or history.

The Spanish national anthem doesn't have any words, so that's an easy job
