QPR lost to Preston for the sixth time in a row on Saturday, soundly thrashed 4-1 at Loftus Road by a vastly superior North End side. 14

our goal kicks are an issue with our crap midfield at the moment. we either go long to wells, who isn't a target man... or we play it short to the centrebacks or scowen. the latter is easily stopped with even the slightest bit of pressure/man marking on the goal kick. it begs the question- why don't we just send furlong higher up the pitch for goal kicks as he actually has a chance of flicking it on?

the smith substitution was perplexing, as usual. smith is good when he gets service from corners, and hes crap when he's flicking on speculative long balls from the keeper. and eze, for all his talents, is not one to win second balls. so putting smith on to knock balls down to wells and eze isn't really a viable option. if youre going to play smith, we need to commit to playing to his style. 4-4-2 with two proper wingers (pav and bright), and take off eze who is not needed as a 10 in that system. in any event, oteh should be playing

having said all that, I don't come away as negatively. without mass, qpr cant afford to go down 1-0 against a defensive team. we cant build up attacks gradually b/c our midfield is too limited, so we need to spring on teams via the counterattack (see: pavs goal against Ipswich, ezes against villa). but the second we went down and allowed preston to settle into shape, the counterattacking option went away. the game would've been really different had we not given up such a soft first goal

the 4 goals, while ugly, was largely a function of McLaren leaving defensive midfield barren without cousins. plus, playing with smith out of possession is like playing a man down

Agree 100% on last point about FA cup game. Problem is with most importantly Luongo and, Cameron our, I’m not sure what our strongest team is at the moment. You’ve also got BOS and Oteh who based on recent performances of first team deserve a chance. But if he plays Manning or Hall, Bos and Oteh does McLaren get accused of playing weakened side?

I also thought that goal kicks were totally unproductive and meant that we didn't really have a workable game plan as our midfield were either bypassed or simply couldn't gain possession. I don't think that many goal kicks go to Wells anyway, as unless they can land near his feet, they're of little worth. The short kicks/throws to defenders were seized on by the lively Preston forwards who made that policy unworkable. It's been noticeable that the favoured approach is to send it down the right flank to Pav or preferably Furlong. Pav was beaten to every header by their No. 16 and consequently, Furlong moved a bit further upfield to achieve only a slightly better success rate. When we did manage a bit of possession, Preston players appeared en masse to prevent any further development. Any loose or second ball inevitably went to the opposition who actually looked keener, faster and generally better at anticipating play.

One positive from the last two performances is that we are unlikely to lose any players in the transfer window, as any scouts will have left thinking ‘nothing to see here’.

Surely any player going down with a head injury needs to be taken out of the game for 5/10 minutes so that a proper medical assessment can be made.
