China’s distrust of its people is shown in its airports. We were delayed 4 hours and couldn’t get a drink.

Hmmm.

Are you quite sure it's not just that they don't trust you?

Very possibly, but no-one else got one either.

Noticeable that Chinese airlines keep the fasten seatbelt sign on most of the flight to stop people wandering around. Even in business class, you’re lucky to get a second drink.

Sorry, a bit late to this party but...

Northern Hemisphere: West Cork, Ireland....a separate state, within a county, within a small country, that has an accent, flavour and attitude of its very own, wrapped up in a beautiful green bundle that's Guinness/Murphy's flavoured.

Southern Hemisphere: Like others have already said on here, New Zealand - what a place. North Island is beautiful, but the South Island is simply breathtaking. Every corner turned presents you with a view that is the most stunning you've seen...until you reach the next corner...and I found the people disarmingly friendly and unpretentious.

Capri I've been twice.

The views from Tiberius's palace are breathtaking.

Don't flush the bog with the loo roll in it though in the little toilet halfway up the only path.
My girlfriend ignored this and when I was ouside waiting I heard screaming from inside, she'd blocked it after ignoring the sign to put it in the bin and the attendant/owner went bat-shit crazy we ran off up the hill.
On the way down she was sitting outside so we waited 'till she went in and ran past at full pelt.

I travelled round India for 8 months on my own after a break up in my mid twenties. Fell in love with the place. I think about that trip every day, especially Leh in Ladakh.

Special mention to Karl’s Orkney. That place is special.

We were heading to Ladakh for our honeymoon in 2011. There was a big flash flood that washed out the road so ended up going to Tanzania. Haven't managed to sort out getting there since but will at some point.

Tanzania is spectacular though - the Serengeti, Kilimanjiro and Zanzibar were an amazing combination, all spectacular in their own right. Long lost regular poster Charlie1 is a big fan too I know.

In the last few years have really got the Asian/SE Asian bug, particularly the big cities. I know it's far from everyone's cup of tea but I love the intensity of those places, the different cultures, foods etc. There's something strangely relaxing about wandering around them. Did Malaysia, Saigon and Hong Kong over Xmas and loved all of it - would live in HK tomorrow if I had the chance.

Then there's the other extreme - remote deserted places - love those too - parts of the SW of America - Utah, rural Nevada, New Mexico - great stuff. Or the Atlas Mountains in Morocco which you get be in the middle of 5hrs from London - fantastic option.

So basically either of the extremes for me - big vibrant cities or beautiful deserted wilderness. Or a combination in one trip - maybe a stopover in Tokyo or similar on the way to New Zealand if we can swing the finances at some point. This situation really amps up the wanderlust doesn't it? We're on the flight path to Heathrow and saw a few more planes land yesterday compared to other recent days if anyone wants to clutch at that particular straw (I am...)

I've always wanted to do the great American road trip, but worried that I would end up realising why most of the locals can't wait to get away from small towns in the middle of nowhere. Norfolk with bigger portions.

The North Coastal route in Northern Ireland is a bit special. Loads of things to see and do all on your own terms because there are not many people or cars about. It’s changed a bit since Game of Thrones; there are a few strangely dressed people about or in the shrubbery but they are easy enough to escape from.

Galapagos sounds amazing.

What’s the route there?

Air france from CDG to Quito , overnight in Quito, then flight from Quito to Galapagos (it stops in Guayaquil to off load and board passengers), then Direct to Galapagos (San Cristobal).

You would have organise trips to other islands or a 2-3 day trip away sleeping on the 40 birth ship that plies its trade there.

Trust me, with the Glalapagos wanting to close down tourist trade, its a 'must do' place.
Swimming with sharks (i snorkelled) seals, rays and loads of fish is an immense experience.
As is getting up close to seals or birs as they have no fear for humans.

We 2 legged guys and gals are allowed to see them up and personal, but not touch, as it allows the creatures of the galapagos not to get friendly and used to humans so that they develop a comfort of them being around.
Some, however you have to move away from as they simply want to play and come very close.

If your a fish fan, just looking into the sea is fantastic, let alone snorkelling. There are areas to see the giant tortoises too, and turtles are plentiful, as are rays.

I was on deck of the ship one morning to photograph sunrise, and as the sun cast its first light over the sea, Manta Rays jumped out of the water, back flipping on the way back down i to the sea.
I never knew they could do it but theres youtube of a whole load doing itoff the californian coast.

Its not cheap to visit, but believe me it is 'THE last unspoiled, untouristy' place in the world and a natural wonder of this planet. You wont ever visit anywhere like it, ever!

I was sure up to about 10 years ago chinese air passengers believed that if they all ran to the front on landing the plane would get there quicker.

I have had so many barnies with Chines in aircraft especially Chinese domestic flights . They all rush to get off usually before the plane has stopped.

I have had cases landing on my head as they all rush to get their carry on bags out of the over heads.

I got to enjoy making myself a human barricade in the centre aisle so they couldn't get past.

Mostly they a f%^king ignorant buzstards who really get on my wick.

fortunately the more recent generations are more conformist.

Yes I understand the Chinese culture, but they really are a filthy lot almost as bad as some on the Willow Tree Estate in Yeading

dont start me on Chinese bogs, the toilets in the old Ade were luxury in comparison

wot he said.

Years of dealing with the Chinese and getting ripped off financially to a decent 6 figure sum, i now truly believe the first thing that comes from their mouths is a lie.

Cant tell you the truth as it might show weekness, will make something with non specified cheaper components just to save a penny, will lie about the worthiness of something made just to get paid.

I once ordered something from a factory in china.....600 pieces in a special colour for my client. No problem, they had made them before, only these items were to have a badge affixed in a certain place and perfectly horizontal.

The company made them and supplied a decorated finished pair of samples for final approval, which my client and i examined and approved for production.

They arrived in the uk, i paid for them at arrival for paperwork to be released for import and they were delivered to my client.

i then got a phone call refusing all 600 items as the badges (4 per item) were not horizontal, some were as much as 30 odd degrees out of true.

Out of 60, only 50 or 60 were acceptable to my client so we refused them with China.
I then got told 'hard luck' thats the best we can do (clearly it wasnt), and they send me iso9002/ 9004 paperwork and QC check paperwork that was really a fabric of lies, and i was lumbered with them all.
That cost me around 10k i never got back, another factory took 17k from me and did a flit, along with my tools etc.

Theres no way to fight these people either , and i cannot recommend any company, manufacturer, individual or country enough to steer clear of them.

I wont use the language i wanted to here, but they robbed me of my pension pot, and my sons inheritance, and lots of money (about 150k in cash, and £300k in tools etc) and basically forced me to close my business.

oh mate, tell me about it.

The owner of the company tried turning the screws on me further and offered me a tax avoidance deal, and by doing so i might get my tools back.

I reported him to the Chinese authorities but they didnt want to know.

UK authorities didnt want to know, in fact there was no help from anyone.
I could sue them but the Chinese courts would cost me a bond up front of the amount i was claiming back, and if i lost, i'd lose the bond.

So in essence, i lost my house, my tools, 40k cash i borrowed from Funding Circle, £100,000 in cash profit from a deal with the chinese through a customer of mine, etc etc etc.

So now i'm homeless, broke, getting broker, and have been thoroughly depressed.
I made the equivalent of almost 1/2 a million in cash and tools and basically had them all 'stolen' from me.

Please note i'm using this language primarily because i'm not naming the company concerned who are still in existance, and merely to show my experiences and thoughts on the Chinese, and their ethics and principles which, in my book, stink!

I remember you had trouble there but that is horrendous when told in full.
I had very small comparable problem with buying shellfish in early 2000s where simply never got paid for deliveries. It was £10k and hit me very hard at the time.
I'm not self employed but back dealing in China now for the last 3yrs and so far not been stung apart from a few relatively minor things. Employing inspectors to do random visits at same time as delivery seems to help.
Good luck getting back on track and hope things pick up for you

Going to places for work gives you a different and usually unfavourable view of a place that you have to fight. I’ve been to Thailand three times, but for a total of about seven days and never set foot out of Bangkok - barely set foot out of the car as I was in traffic so much of the time. I’m sure I’ll go back some time to take a proper look. The one place I won’t is China, didn’t enjoy my times there at all.

I concur re. the traffic in Bangkok, it was horrific when I was there. I went as part of a work trip - very fortunate to be able to get that opportunity for free - and my boss was insistent on us going to the shops by taxi, even though our hotel was very close to the centre and the hellish traffic was plainly visible. Mind you, this is the boss who, on another work trip, said "So, are we getting a cab to the restaurant?" when we were stood outside the hotel looking at said eatery

When it comes to islands, I have waxed lyrical about Puerto Rico on here before and some parts of that island are amazing (especially the incomparable bioluminescent bay) but Mrs R from Afar and I love Crete, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia too.

Crete in the last week of April/first week of May is amazing, and we would be going there this Saturday, for the fourth spring in a row, were it not for the lockdown. Matala, on the south coast, is fab, a hippy resort with a relaxed atmosphere, good facilities, a beautiful bay and a Roman necropolis built into the cliffs.

Corte, in the centre of Corsica, is very atmospheric and authentic, as well as steeped in history.

As for Sicily, Siracusa is very historic and picturesque and you can get away from the crowds by just walking a few hundred yards from the centre.

In Sardinia, Su Gunventeddu, near Cagliari, has a lovely beach with impressive Roman remains right by the shore.

As for the UK, it's hard to pick one place, there are lots of good ones. Lyme Regis is great, as is Bridport, ditto Frome.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Not quite on topic but..

Cape Town has a special place in my heart, I've also been there twice.

It's the most beautiful city I've ever seen.

Table mountain with a 'tablecloth' on and watching the sun sink. Stunning

Put one foot in the freezing Atlantic (even though its 26C) then drive over the coast to the Indian Ocean which is like a hot spa.

I'd recommend you stay with Saffas though as I did.
