Cricket 2025 County/International Thread by Superhoops2808 9 Apr 2024 13:39With the football season coming to a close in a months time, some here will turn their attention to the smell of freshly mown grass and long days sat in the hot sunny weather watching the great game of cricket.
As a member of Kent Cricket Club, I got to enjoy my first match of the season against Somerset at Canterbury over the last few days. Unfortunately, as is always the way starting the season this early, the first day was lost to rain. In fact nearly all the games were affected by rain, some without a ball even being bowled.
But I did manage to get to see 2 centurions at Canterbury yesterday and a very enjoyable day of cricket (even if I did get sun burned head - Yes I know should have taken a cap).
Did anyone else get to see cricket over the last few days? I know we have several Middlesex supporters who no doubt enjoyed the 'runfest' at Lords (over 1300 runs I believe)
I've started a new thread for the 2026 season, and I've started it now because the T20 World Cup starts a week today. (And in fact 2 months and we will be chatting county cricket red ball)
In a group with Italy, Nepal and Scotland and a pretty solid squad I expect that we will progress beyond the group stage. After that who knows and will depend on fitness. Curran and Salt played very well in the first game warm up game v Sri Lanka but tougher tests are ahead. Anyway, here is the squad for England (albeit still provisional).
Harry Brook (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue, Luke Wood.
Be relying on Archer to stay fit (as per usual) - But hope that Brook finally stands up as captain, and Banton and Jacks perfom like we know they can at county level. If all that clicks should be a good watch. |  | | |  |

Ireland did really well with the ball against Sri Lanka, bar two loose overs towards the end. Unfortunately they simply didn't score enough boundaries when they needed them and were guilty of chasing too hard. |

True. I was watching it thinking that in snooker or rugby union the referee would have given him a warning of the consequences should he continue to commit fouls.

Was actually hoping Nepal would win, but typically Curran bowled a decent last over...

Unlikeable? I don't get that. For every year I have been alive, one defeat in an Ashes away tour completely turns the narrative against the team and coach, regardless of whatever else they have been doing for the previous 3 years. It is so boring. We just got beaten by a better side in Oz, and would have done whether we had been playing golf / drinking or staying at home playing scrabble or if Sibley had been playing or whatever. The management seem to have realised that our approach needs to change a bit, and that's fine by me. Why throw away the previous 3 years of decent progress?
We just beat a very tough Sri Lanka side away in both ODIs and T20s, and now have started with a win. It's T20 - anything can happen, but we (or Curran) stood firm for once and didn't cave in. Also, Nepal are not some ridiculously poor side. They are really talented, very nearly beat South Africa and I can see them qualifying from this group. |  | | |

I love Harry Brook - at times appears to have the same train of thought as my toddler, the Jack Grealish of cricketers. Also, although going out on the piss the night before playing an International level match is absolutely bonkers, I do respect him trying to take the blame for the whole New Zealand debacle and protecting his players. |  | | |

Good effort by the bowlers to defend that low England total.
Curran got us back into it with Bethell doing well with the wickets
On a side note, a great England U19 semi final v Australia today. Went right to the wire but England are in the final on Friday. Thomas Rew, (younger brother of James) scored 110. Definitely one for the future and already looking a bigger prospect than his brother.
Australia got hammered in record T20 defeat by Pakistan too. Shame that Bangladesh and Pakistan have been impacted by politics because of the stupid ICC |
