Frankie Bennett- Came at a cheap price and started just 5 League games for Saints plus another 14 as sub and yes i saw the goal against Chelsea as well.
He was one of those that we took a punt on, it didn't work but we got our money back, shouldnt really be classed as the worst we have seen.
As you say Sulemana delivered little I'm surprised we got our money back on him, but again far from the worst I have seen
Lets throw in Terry Curran for the older members of this board, although he too had his place in history for his goal in the 1-0 second leg league cup semi final against Leeds that took us to Wembley, so again perhaps not the worst | |

How about Mikhail Antonio, he played as a winger for us and in the League he started 14 games and another 14 as a sub, in one of the games at Wycombe he was so bad he was substituted after just 34 minutes.
He was a little hit and miss, however his reputation is perhaps enhanced because he scored a goal in the Johnson Paint Trophy final at Wembley followed that up with the only goal in a 1-0 win against Charlton and then a couple in the penultimate game of the season against Carlisle again to beat them 3-2.

He was young and very raw, I think he’d been playing non league for Tooting and Mitchum the season before and came on loan from Reading
After the goal at Wembley and the winner against Leeds the other thing I remember was him taking on a winger, toe punting it past him and running off the pitch to go past him, hadn’t seen anyone do that since I was playing football at school. Can’t remember who it was against but I amused me at the time | |

How about Andy Williams, made his debut age 20 in 1997 and got a full cap for Wales shortly after, but never did much, just3 starts in the League plus 18 as sub, injury affected his career, but we got £65k for him from Swindon so not bad business financially | |

Plenty of others I could think of like Lee Powell for example
It’s easy to knock wingers as they can drift out of games and when trying to be creative lose possession. Whilst they can be frustrating I’d much rather have a player trying to make something happen than just make a safe pass inside and just recycle possession and give someone else the responsibility
What about Tom Jenkins? way before my time but didn’t we pay a fair amount for him to replace John Sydenham? Going by what I’ve read and what I’ve been told by my dad and grandad | |

I saw Jenkins play a few times and he had pace, but a bit errattic.
We signed him for £60k in December 1969 and we sold him to Swindon for £50,000 3 years later.
He started 95 games plus 1 as sub and scored 6 goals which was ok if not spectacular, overall I don't think he was a candidate for worst winger ever | |

Neil Heaney v Newcastle, 1 nil down after 86 minutes, Heaney scores the equaliser and we win 3-1. Came out of the Archers with bleeding shins after utter limbs when we went 3-1 up and some complete stranger in the row in front had me in a celebratory bear hug and I cut them on the seat
Stuart Ripley again against Newcastle, 1 down at half time, the smoggy wing wizard played like a man possessed in the second half and we ended up winning 4-2. Pilot Light( which I’m pretty sure I read was his nick-name) set up at least 2 of the goals
We really did have the measure of Newcastle at home in those days, a guaranteed 3 points and they made poor players look like world beaters | |

My dad had a season ticket in the back row behind the goal, used to sit next to the bloke who brought the massive flag that would be unfurled at the start of the game
Used to sit next to Tina who subsequently did the stadium tours at St Mary’s and a really funny chap called Dick who had a really dry sense of humour and used to crack me up. When we moved to St Mary’s we still sat together behind the goal in The Chapel. Haven’t seen either of them for years and they don’t sit in the same seats anymore
I think Newcastle just capitulated, Darren Peacock and Srnicek had a bit of a nightmare from what I remember and I think it was just one of those nights when the will and support of the crowd drove us on | |
